The Arena
Zamasu arrived in Kahndaq, a nation ruled by a single powerful man, and decided it was a perfect example of mortal arrogance: a mortal who called himself a king and a god. He descended over the capital in a burst of divine light and announced that every mortal in the nation would be erased.
Black Adam rose from his palace to meet him, lightning crackling around his fists. “No one threatens my people,” he said, his voice like thunder. Zamasu looked down at him with contempt. “Your power was given to you by gods. I am a god. You will kneel.” Black Adam’s eyes blazed. “I kneel to no one.”
He shouted the word, and the magic lightning came down from the sky.
Round One
The lightning struck Zamasu full on, the power of six Egyptian gods, and blasted a hole through his chest. Zamasu looked down at the hole and smiled as it closed. “Immortal,” he said simply. Black Adam frowned and struck again, a flurry of blows with the strength of Shu and the speed of Heru, each one tearing Zamasu apart.
Each time, Zamasu rebuilt himself, laughing. He answered with divine blades of light that cut through Black Adam’s magic-hardened skin, drawing real blood. Black Adam staggered, astonished. Nothing had cut him like that in five thousand years.
They fought across the desert, Black Adam winning every exchange, Zamasu losing every one and getting up anyway.
The Turn
Black Adam had defeated gods before, but always by killing them or banishing them. He threw Zamasu into the sun, and Zamasu flew back. He buried him under a mountain, and Zamasu dug himself out. He struck him with the full magic lightning, and Zamasu rebuilt himself from ashes.
Black Adam’s power came from the gods, and it was vast. But it was not infinite. Every time he called the lightning, every time he struck with the strength of the gods, a little of it was spent. Zamasu, immortal, could keep going forever.
“You are strong for a mortal,” Zamasu said. “But you are still mortal.” For the first time in five thousand years, Black Adam felt tired.
The Finish
Black Adam fought on with everything he had, for his people, for Kahndaq, and he was magnificent. But exhaustion caught up with him. His lightning grew dimmer. His blows grew slower. Zamasu’s divine blades began to land, again and again, until Black Adam fell to his knees in the sand.
Zamasu raised his hand, ready to erase him and then the nation behind him. Black Adam looked up at him and spat blood into the sand. “You will have to kill me first,” he said. “And then you will have to kill every one of them. And they will not kneel either.”
Zamasu hesitated. He looked past Black Adam at the people of Kahndaq, gathered on the city walls, watching, not one of them fleeing. Something in his eyes flickered, an old memory of a Supreme Kai who had once believed mortals could be good. Then he lowered his hand and vanished. Black Adam had lost the fight. His people had won it for him.
The verdict
Zamasu wins
Black Adam wins almost every exchange and his magic lightning hurts even a god, but Zamasu is immortal and rebuilds from anything, while Black Adam’s power, though vast, eventually tires.
- ImmortalityZamasu cannot be killed, no matter how often he is struck down.
- Divine bladesThey cut Black Adam’s magic-hardened skin.
- EnduranceBlack Adam tires; an immortal does not.
How the rematch could go differently: A Black Adam who sealed Zamasu away, the way Kahndaq’s ancient wizards once sealed him, could win without needing to kill him.
