The Arena

The Grand Priest of the multiverse arranged an exhibition match: the strongest mortal from one reality against the strongest hero from another. Jiren arrived first, standing perfectly still in the centre of a floating stone arena, arms folded, eyes closed. Superman flew in a moment later and landed lightly across from him, his red cape settling in a wind that did not exist.

“I’m told you don’t talk much,” Superman said, smiling. Jiren opened his eyes. “Words are weakness. Only strength is absolute.” Superman’s smile faded slightly. “I’ve met people who believed that. Most of them were very lonely.” Jiren did not answer. His aura flared red, and the arena cracked beneath his feet.

Superman nodded slowly, rolled his shoulders, and took off the gentle restraint he wears every moment of every day.

Round One

Jiren struck first, a punch so fast it arrived before its own sound, and Superman took it on his crossed forearms and slid back across the arena. His arms ached. Very few beings had ever made Superman’s arms ache. He answered with a straight right that drove Jiren back three steps, and the void around them rippled like water.

They traded blows at speeds that bent light, each one shaking the arena. Jiren was the more disciplined fighter, every movement trained to perfection over a lifetime of solitude. Superman was raw power held back by decades of care, and he was learning, blow by blow, that he did not have to hold back here.

Jiren fired a blast of red ki. Superman met it with heat vision, and the two beams pushed against each other until both exploded in a flash that blinded the watching gods.

The Turn

Jiren pushed his power past its limit, his aura blazing like a red star, and hit Superman with a combination that would have shattered a planet. Superman flew across the arena and crashed into the far wall, and for a moment, he did not move. The gods watching leaned forward.

Superman stood up, wiped blood from his lip, and looked at Jiren. Not with anger. With concern. “You’re pushing too hard,” he said. “That kind of power, alone, with nobody to fight for. I know what that does to you.” Jiren froze, his fist half raised. Nobody had ever spoken to him like that in the middle of a fight.

“I need no one,” Jiren said. Superman shook his head gently. “Everyone needs someone. That’s where I get my strength.”

The Finish

Jiren attacked with everything left in him, and Superman met it head on, drawing on something deeper than solar energy: every person he had ever saved, every friend, every reason he had to keep standing. His punch hit Jiren in the chest, and the strongest mortal in Universe 11 flew backwards across the arena and landed on his knees.

He tried to rise and could not. His power was spent, burned out by a fight he had tried to win alone. Superman walked over and knelt in front of him, and offered his hand.

Jiren looked at it for a long time. Then, slowly, for the first time since he had lost his master, he reached out and took someone else’s hand. Superman pulled him to his feet. “There’s a team on my world,” Superman said. “You’d hate them at first.” For the first time in years, Jiren almost smiled.

The verdict

Superman wins

Jiren matches Superman in raw power and may even edge him in discipline, but he fights alone and burns himself out, while Superman draws on a reason to keep going that Jiren has never had.

  • EnduranceSuperman’s solar power keeps him fighting after Jiren burns out.
  • Restraint liftedSuperman holds back every day; here he does not have to.
  • PurposeSuperman fights for others, and it carries him through.

How the rematch could go differently: A Jiren who had learned to trust others, the way he did after the Tournament of Power, could find the extra strength he lacked.
