The Arena

The Grand Priest arranged another exhibition. Jiren stood on the floating arena, arms folded, eyes closed, his aura burning faintly red. Across from him, a bald man in a yellow suit and a cape stood scratching his ear, looking around at the void. “Is there a supermarket near here? I need to get back by six. There’s a sale.”

Jiren opened his eyes. “You are Saitama. They say you have never lost.” Saitama shrugged. “Yeah. It’s kind of boring.” Jiren’s eyes narrowed. Boring. He had trained for years in solitude to become the strongest mortal in his universe. Nothing about strength was boring. “Then I will give you a fight worth remembering.”

Saitama perked up slightly. “Really? That would be cool.”

Round One

Jiren struck first, a punch so fast and powerful it cracked the void itself. Saitama took it on the cheek, and his head turned slightly. He blinked. “Huh. That actually felt like something.” Jiren froze, his fist still against Saitama’s face. He had used enough power to destroy a planet.

He attacked again, and again, faster, a storm of blows that tore the arena to pieces. Saitama stood in the middle of it, taking every hit, nodding thoughtfully. “Okay. You’re strong. Like, really strong.” Then he punched back, casually, not even a serious punch, and Jiren flew across the arena and crashed into the edge of the void.

Jiren rose, staring. For the first time in his life, he had been hit by something he could not understand.

The Turn

Jiren pushed past his limits, his aura exploding into a red sun, his power reaching levels that had shaken gods. He fired a Power Impact, a blast that could have wiped out a galaxy, and it hit Saitama full on. When the light faded, Saitama’s suit was in tatters. His cape was gone.

Saitama looked down at himself, then up at Jiren, and something in his eyes changed. Hope. “Wait,” he said. “You ruined my suit. That never happens.” He grinned, a real grin, the grin of a man who has been waiting his whole life. “Okay. Let’s go.”

He moved. Jiren did not see him move.

The Finish

Saitama reappeared in front of Jiren and threw a serious punch. Not a normal punch. A serious one. Jiren had perhaps a thousandth of a second to understand that the fist coming toward him carried more power than anything he had ever felt, and then the punch stopped a hair’s width from his face, and the wind from it blew Jiren clean off the arena.

Jiren floated in the void, untouched but utterly defeated, his aura gone, staring at the bald man standing on the broken arena. Saitama had pulled the punch at the last moment, because he did not want to hurt someone who had finally given him a good fight.

Jiren floated back onto the arena. They stood facing each other. “Why did you stop?” Jiren asked. Saitama shrugged. “You were fun. I didn’t want to break you.” Then he looked at his watch. “Oh no. The sale.” He ran off. Jiren watched him go and, for the first time, wondered if strength really was everything.

The verdict

Saitama wins

Jiren is one of the strongest mortals in any multiverse and even ruins Saitama’s suit, but Saitama’s broken limiter puts him beyond any ceiling, and a serious punch he pulls at the last second blows Jiren out of the arena.

  • Broken limiterSaitama has no ceiling on his strength.
  • DurabilityHe takes a galaxy-level blast and loses only his suit.
  • Serious punchEven pulled, it ends the fight.

How the rematch could go differently: There is no rematch. Saitama wins every fight, and Jiren knows it now.

Who do you think wins?
