The Arena
The Silver Surfer was crossing a dead star system when he sensed a power on a lonely asteroid: not cosmic, but mortal, and vast. He glided down and found Jiren meditating alone on the rock, floating a few centimetres above it, his eyes closed. Jiren spoke without opening them. “You carry borrowed power.”
The Surfer stepped off his board. “The Power Cosmic was given to me by Galactus.” Jiren opened his eyes. “Given. Not earned.” The Surfer’s expression did not change. “Earning power is no guarantee of using it wisely.” Jiren rose to his feet. “Show me, then, what borrowed power can do against earned strength.”
The Surfer sighed. He had not come to fight. But he recognised the loneliness in the warrior’s voice. He raised his hand.
Round One
The Surfer fired a beam of the Power Cosmic, enough to shatter a moon. Jiren crossed his arms and took it, sliding back across the asteroid but staying on his feet. He charged, and his punch drove the Surfer back through three asteroids before he could stop himself.
They fought across the asteroid belt, the Surfer gliding through space on his board, firing cosmic energy, Jiren flying after him with blows that shattered rock. The Surfer was faster in space and had a greater range of powers: matter manipulation, energy absorption, cosmic awareness. Jiren was simply stronger.
The Surfer tried to turn the asteroid beneath Jiren’s feet into gas. Jiren was already somewhere else.
The Turn
Jiren’s power kept rising. He had trained for years, alone, pushing past every limit, and when he pushed now, his aura exploded into a red sun that lit up the entire dead star system. The Surfer felt it and, for the first time, felt real concern. This mortal’s power was approaching the level of the cosmic beings he knew.
He threw everything at Jiren: cosmic blasts, matter transformation, a wall of energy that would have stopped a planet. Jiren broke through it all, one blow at a time, his eyes never leaving the Surfer. He did not use tricks. He did not need them.
The Surfer realised that his greatest strength, the Power Cosmic, was not his own, and that this warrior’s strength was entirely his.
The Finish
Jiren caught the Surfer’s board in one hand, stopped it dead, and hit the Surfer with a punch that sent him spinning through the asteroid belt. The Surfer crashed into the largest asteroid and lay there, his silver body cracked, the Power Cosmic flickering around him. He could not rise.
Jiren floated down and stood over him. The Surfer looked up at him. “You are very strong,” he said. “And very alone.” Jiren said nothing. The Surfer pushed himself up on one elbow. “I gave myself to Galactus to save my world. Everything I have was given to me in exchange for my people’s lives. What did you give yours for?”
Jiren did not answer for a long time. Then he turned away. “Nothing,” he said quietly. “I lost them anyway.” He flew off into the dark. The Surfer watched him go and, for the first time, felt sorry for someone who had beaten him.
