The Arena

Whis followed the smell of excellent tea into the Sanctum Sanctorum, where Doctor Strange was reading an ancient book by the fire. The angel floated into the room uninvited, his staff glowing, and sat down in the armchair opposite. “What a charming house,” he said. “Is that Darjeeling?”

Strange looked up, alarmed. He had sensed nothing. No portal, no spell, no ripple in the mystic arts. “Who are you?” Whis smiled and poured himself a cup. “Someone who has heard a great deal about the Sorcerer Supreme. I thought I might see for myself.” Strange closed his book slowly. “See what, exactly?” Whis sipped his tea. “How good you are.”

Strange stood, his hands glowing. Whis did not even put down his cup.

Round One

Strange opened with the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak. They passed through Whis like mist. He tried the Seven Rings of Raggadorr. Whis tilted his head, and the rings dissolved. He cast a portal beneath Whis to send him to another dimension. Whis simply stepped over it and sat back down.

Whis tapped the floor with his staff, and Strange flew across the room into a bookshelf. The books rained down on him. He climbed out, his cloak tangled, and stared at the angel, who was still holding his teacup. Not a drop had been spilled.

“You have a great deal of talent,” Whis said kindly. “But you rely on spells. The body must learn to move on its own.”

The Turn

Strange opened the Eye of Agamotto. Green light filled the room, and time itself began to reverse: the books flew back onto their shelves, the broken window reassembled, and Strange rewound the fight to the moment before it began, ready to try again with everything he now knew.

Whis smiled and tapped his staff once. “Temporal Do-Over.” Time rewound three minutes further than Strange had sent it. Suddenly Strange was standing in his library with no memory of having opened the Eye at all, and Whis was sitting by the fire, drinking tea he had not yet poured.

Strange felt it, a ghost of a memory, a sense that something had been taken from him. He looked at the angel and understood: this being had power over time that made his own look like a child’s toy.

The Finish

Strange tried one final thing: a binding spell of his own design, the strongest he had ever cast, drawing on every mystic source in the multiverse. Whis moved, faster than thought, and tapped Strange lightly on the forehead with one finger. The Sorcerer Supreme sat down very suddenly in his armchair, unable to move.

Whis finished his tea and set the cup down. “You are very good,” he said. “Truly. Among mortals, you would be one of my best students.” Strange stared at him, still frozen. “What are you?” Whis smiled. “An attendant. I serve a god of destruction. Mostly I cook for him.”

He released Strange with a wave of his staff and floated toward the door. “Your tea is excellent. I may come back.” He vanished in a column of light. Strange sat in silence for a long time. Then, very carefully, he hid his entire tea collection where no one, not even an angel, would ever find it.

The verdict

Whis wins

Doctor Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme and can reverse time, but Whis is an angel whose power over time and space dwarfs the mystic arts, and he wins without spilling his tea.

  • Temporal Do-OverWhis can rewind time further than Strange can.
  • Autonomous Ultra InstinctHe dodges and counters without thinking.
  • Power scaleAngels are stronger than the gods of destruction they serve.

How the rematch could go differently: There is no version of Strange short of one wielding the Infinity Gauntlet who could seriously threaten an angel.

Who do you think wins?

Who would win in a fight between Whis and Doctor Strange?

Whis wins. Doctor Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme and can reverse time, but Whis is an angel whose power over time and space dwarfs the mystic arts, and he wins without spilling his tea.
