The Arena
Itachi Uchiha appeared in the Sanctum Sanctorum in a swirl of crows, sent there by a reverse summoning that had gone strangely wrong. Doctor Strange was waiting in the main hall, the Eye of Agamotto glowing faintly at his chest. “You are the one with the eyes,” Strange said. “I felt you arrive.”
Itachi coughed into his sleeve. “I did not come here to fight.” Strange nodded slowly. “I know. But you are carrying a power that bends minds, and I cannot let it loose in this world.” Itachi looked at him with tired red eyes. “Then let us see whose illusions are stronger.”
His Sharingan spun. Strange’s hands began to glow.
Round One
Itachi cast a genjutsu, and Strange found himself standing in a field of crows, each one with red eyes, watching him. He recognised it immediately: an illusion, a trick of perception. He raised his hand and spoke a word of power, and the field of crows shattered like glass. He was back in the Sanctum.
Itachi was impressed. Few people had ever broken his genjutsu so quickly. He attacked with fire, a great fireball that filled the hall, and Strange caught it with a mystic shield and folded it into a portal, sending it somewhere else entirely.
Strange answered by pulling them both into the Mirror Dimension, where the walls bent and the floor became the ceiling.
The Turn
In the Mirror Dimension, Itachi looked into Strange’s eyes and cast Tsukuyomi, the illusion that traps a mind for seventy-two hours in a single second. Strange found himself bound to a cross in a crimson world, and Itachi stood before him with a sword.
But Strange had already experienced something far worse. He had looked into fourteen million futures. He had died over and over in the Dark Dimension, trapped in a time loop with Dormammu, until the god of chaos gave up. Seventy-two hours of illusion was nothing to a man who had endured an eternity.
He looked at Itachi through the crimson illusion and spoke calmly. “I have been trapped in time before. You do not frighten me.” And the Tsukuyomi cracked.
The Finish
Strange broke free, and in the same moment, he opened the Eye of Agamotto and turned time back on Itachi’s Susanoo as it began to form, reversing it, unravelling it before it could take shape. Itachi tried to cast Amaterasu, the black flames that never go out. Strange caught the flames in a time loop, letting them burn the same second forever.
Itachi stood in the Mirror Dimension, his techniques undone, his chakra exhausted, his illness catching up with him. He coughed, and there was blood on his hand. Strange lowered his hands and walked over, his expression softening. “You are dying,” he said. Itachi nodded. “I have been dying for a long time.”
Strange returned them both to the Sanctum and sat with Itachi by the fire. He could not cure him; the illness was beyond even the mystic arts. But he gave him tea, and quiet, and someone to talk to. Itachi told him about his little brother. Strange listened. When Itachi finally left in a swirl of crows, he looked, for the first time in years, a little less alone.
The verdict
Doctor Strange wins
Itachi is a master of illusion whose Tsukuyomi breaks almost any mind, but Doctor Strange has endured an eternity in a time loop, and the Eye of Agamotto lets him reverse and freeze Itachi’s techniques before they finish forming.
- Mental resilienceStrange has endured far worse than seventy-two hours of illusion.
- The Eye of AgamottoHe reverses and loops Itachi’s techniques.
- The Mirror DimensionA realm where Strange controls the rules.
How the rematch could go differently: A healthy Itachi with Izanami, the genjutsu that traps a mind in a loop of its own, could turn Strange’s greatest strength against him.
