The Arena
Zamasu stood alone on a dead Earth, the last living being on a planet he had cleansed of every mortal, admiring the silence. He had won. There was no one left to oppose him. Then a voice spoke behind him, deep and cold, like a tomb opening. “You have been judged.”
Zamasu turned. A figure in a green hooded cloak floated above the ruins, his face pale as death, his eyes white and burning. The Spectre. “Judged?” Zamasu laughed. “I am a god. Gods are not judged. Gods do the judging.” The Spectre did not blink. “Every god,” he said, “answers to a higher one.”
The sky above the dead Earth turned green.
Round One
Zamasu attacked with divine blades of light, slicing through the ruins toward the Spectre. They passed through him without a mark. The Spectre raised one hand, and the ground beneath Zamasu opened into a pit full of the faces of every person he had killed, billions of them, screaming his name.
Zamasu rose out of the pit, immortal and unharmed, but shaken. “Their deaths were necessary,” he shouted. “Mortals are a disease!” The Spectre floated closer. “And you,” he said, “are the cure that became the plague.”
He reached out, and Zamasu’s divine aura began to fade, draining away into the green sky.
The Turn
Zamasu fought with everything he had, fusing his divine light into a wave that tore through the dead city. The Spectre took it full on and grew larger, his cloak spreading across the sky until he was the size of the planet itself, looking down at Zamasu like a man looking at an ant.
Zamasu’s immortality had been granted by the Super Dragon Balls, a wish. But the Spectre’s power came from the divine authority behind all creation. A wish could protect Zamasu from death. It could not protect him from judgment.
“Your punishment,” the Spectre said, “will fit your crime.”
The Finish
The Spectre did not kill Zamasu. He could not, perhaps, and he did not want to. Instead, he made him mortal. With a single gesture, the immortality drained out of Zamasu’s body, and the god who despised mortals felt, for the first time, the fragile, temporary heartbeat of a mortal life.
Zamasu fell to his knees in the ruins, gasping, feeling his own pulse, his own breath, his own fear. “What have you done?” he whispered. The Spectre shrank back to human size and floated above him. “You hated mortals. Now you will understand them. You will live a mortal life, among the ruins you made, and you will know every day what you took.”
The Spectre vanished. Zamasu was left alone on the dead Earth, a mortal among ghosts, and for the first time in his existence, he wept. It was, the Spectre knew, the only justice that would ever reach him.
The verdict
The Spectre wins
Zamasu’s immortality protects him from death, but the Spectre is the wrath of a higher god, and divine judgment is a force a wish cannot protect against.
- Divine authorityThe Spectre draws on the power behind creation itself.
- Poetic justiceHe strips Zamasu’s immortality and makes him mortal.
- IntangibilityZamasu’s divine blades pass straight through him.
How the rematch could go differently: There is no rematch. The Spectre’s judgment is final.
