The Arena
The Spectre sensed a great sin in New York: a dark entity called the Void, hiding inside the city’s brightest hero, responsible for thousands of deaths the hero did not even remember. He descended over the city in his green cloak, and the Sentry flew up to meet him, golden and radiant, his cape blazing like the sun.
“You’re not welcome here,” the Sentry said, uncertain, his voice shaking slightly. The Spectre looked through him, into him. “I have not come for you, Robert Reynolds. I have come for the darkness you carry.” The Sentry’s face went pale. He knew exactly what the Spectre meant. And deep inside him, something laughed.
The sky darkened. The Sentry’s golden light flickered, and a black shadow began to spread across it.
Round One
The Sentry attacked first, out of fear, a punch with the power of a million exploding suns. It hit the Spectre and passed through him without a mark, because the Spectre is not flesh. He is divine judgment given form. The Sentry punched again and again, and every blow found nothing.
The Spectre raised his hand, and the Sentry froze in mid-air, held by a power older than the universe. “I am not here to harm you,” the Spectre said. “I am here to judge what hides within you.” The Sentry screamed, and the shadow inside him screamed with him.
The Void began to tear its way out.
The Turn
The Void burst out of the Sentry, a towering shadow of tentacles and teeth, the dark side of his power made real, every death it had caused hanging around it like a cloud of ghosts. It struck the Spectre with the full strength of a million dark suns, and for the first time, the Spectre felt it.
He grew. His cloak spread across the sky until it covered the entire city, then the entire world, and the Void found itself held in the palm of a hand the size of a continent. “You,” the Spectre said, his voice shaking the stars, “have been judged.”
The Void struggled, and for a moment, it was strong enough to push back against God’s wrath itself.
The Finish
Then the Spectre closed his hand. The ghosts of every person the Void had killed rose around it, and the Spectre gave each of them a voice. The Void heard them all at once, thousands of voices naming what it had done, and it began to shrink, and shrink, until it was a small black shadow cowering in the Spectre’s palm.
He did not destroy it. He separated it completely from Robert Reynolds and sealed it in a place outside creation, where it would never touch another soul. The Sentry fell from the sky, his golden light dim but clean for the first time in years, and the Spectre caught him and set him gently on a rooftop.
Robert lay there, weeping, feeling lighter than he could remember. The Spectre looked down at him. “You were not guilty,” he said. “But you were not innocent either. Live well, Robert Reynolds. You have been given a second chance.” He vanished. The sun came out over New York, and it seemed, to everyone who saw it, a little brighter than usual.
The verdict
The Spectre wins
The Sentry and the Void have the power of a million suns, but the Spectre is divine judgment, intangible to physical blows and able to grow to any scale, and he seals the Void away forever.
- IntangibilityThe Sentry’s punches pass straight through the Spectre.
- Divine authorityThe Spectre’s judgment overrides even the Void’s power.
- ScaleHe grows larger than the world to contain the Void.
How the rematch could go differently: There is no rematch. The Spectre’s judgment is final.
