The Arena

Trigon opened a portal into New York, intending to conquer it as he had conquered countless dimensions. The Sentry flew up to meet him, glowing gold, and Trigon dragged them both through the portal into his own dimension, a world of fire and ash where he was strongest.

The demon grew to the size of a mountain and laughed down at the golden hero. “You burn brightly,” Trigon said. “I wonder what darkness I will find when I look inside you.” The Sentry clenched his fists, trembling. “You don’t want to look inside me,” he said quietly. “Trust me.”

Trigon reached for his mind anyway.

Round One

The Sentry attacked first, a punch with the power of a million exploding suns, and it hit Trigon in the chest and rocked the mountain-sized demon back. Trigon answered with beams of crimson fire from his four eyes, and the Sentry flew through them, burning, his golden light flickering.

They fought across the burning dimension, two titans tearing through mountains of ash. The Sentry was faster, a golden streak of light. Trigon was larger and drew power from his home dimension, every wound healing as the fire and ash flowed back into him.

Then Trigon reached into the Sentry’s mind, searching for his darkest fear, the way he always does.

The Turn

Trigon found what he was looking for: a vast darkness at the heart of the golden hero, a shadow called the Void. He smiled and began to pull it to the surface, intending to turn the Sentry’s own darkness against him, the way he had corrupted so many heroes before.

The Void came out. And the Void looked at Trigon. Trigon felt something he had not felt in a thousand years: the attention of a darkness older, colder and hungrier than his own. The Void did not want to be used. It wanted to devour.

The Sentry screamed, half in pain, half in warning. “I told you,” he gasped. “I told you not to look.”

The Finish

The Void tore through Trigon’s mind and into his body, a storm of black tentacles wrapping the mountain-sized demon, draining his power, consuming the fire of his dimension. Trigon roared and struggled and shrank, smaller and smaller, until he was barely larger than a man, kneeling in the ash.

With a tremendous effort, the Sentry pulled the Void back inside himself, his golden light returning, flickering, exhausted. He hovered above the defeated demon, shaking. “I didn’t want to do that,” he said. “I never want to do that.”

Trigon looked up at him with four frightened eyes. For the first time, the demon who corrupts everyone had met a soul whose darkness was worse than anything he could create, and whose light was strong enough to hold it in. The Sentry flew back through the portal and sealed it behind him. Trigon did not try to open it again.

The verdict

Sentry wins

Trigon is a dimension-conquering demon who corrupts heroes by drawing out their darkness, but the Sentry’s darkness is the Void, and when Trigon pulls it to the surface, it devours him instead.

  • The VoidThe Sentry’s dark side is more dangerous than Trigon.
  • BackfireTrigon’s corruption tactic releases something he cannot control.
  • Power of a million sunsThe Sentry matches Trigon blow for blow before the Void emerges.

How the rematch could go differently: A Trigon who never looked inside the Sentry and fought him purely with demonic power could win on his home ground.
