The Arena
Trigon tore open a portal on the edge of the nine realms, a giant red demon with four burning eyes and antlers like a crown, his voice shaking the stars. He had conquered dimensions beyond counting. The Norse realms were simply the next on his list. He stepped onto a frozen world near Asgard, and the ice melted beneath his feet.
Thor landed in front of him in a crash of thunder, Mjolnir in hand, his cape snapping in the wind. “You trespass on the borders of Asgard, demon.” Trigon laughed, a sound like a mountain splitting. “I have devoured gods older than your entire pantheon, little thunderer.” Thor grinned and spun his hammer. “Then you will find me very hard to swallow.”
The storm broke over them both.
Round One
Trigon fired beams of crimson fire from his four eyes, and Thor met them with lightning from Mjolnir. The two forces collided in the air between them and exploded, melting a mountain behind Thor and shattering a moon in orbit. Trigon stepped forward, grew to the size of a mountain himself, and swatted at Thor like a fly.
Thor flew under the giant hand and struck Trigon in the jaw with Mjolnir, a blow that rocked the demon back. Trigon roared and grabbed him, crushing him in one enormous fist. Thor’s armour cracked. Then lightning exploded out of his body in every direction, and Trigon dropped him with a burnt hand.
Thor tumbled through the air, caught himself and laughed. “You hit harder than a frost giant!” Trigon’s four eyes narrowed.
The Turn
Trigon’s greatest weapon was not his strength. It was his ability to corrupt. He reached into Thor’s mind and showed him visions: Asgard in flames, his father dead, his brother laughing over his body, every person he loved turning against him. “This is what you will become,” Trigon whispered. “Serve me, and none of it will happen.”
Thor fell to one knee on the frozen ground, his hands on his head, the visions burning through him. For a long moment, the God of Thunder did not move, and Trigon smiled, certain he had broken him.
Then Thor began to laugh. “You show me my nightmares?” he said, rising slowly. “Demon, I have lived through every one of them already.”
The Finish
Thor raised Mjolnir to the sky and called down the God Blast, lightning from every storm in every realm, focused through the hammer into a single strike. It hit Trigon square in the chest and drove the giant demon back through his own portal, screaming, burning, shrinking as the lightning tore through him.
Thor followed him to the edge of the portal and threw Mjolnir after him, and the hammer struck the portal itself and sealed it shut with a final crack of thunder. The burning world fell silent. Snow began to fall again on the melted ice.
Mjolnir returned to Thor’s hand. He stood alone on the frozen world, battered and bleeding, and looked up at the stars. Then he sat down heavily on a rock and laughed until his ribs hurt. When the Warriors Three arrived, they found him there, still laughing, and he refused to tell them why until they bought the first round.
The verdict
Thor wins
Trigon is a demon of dimension-conquering power whose mind attacks break most heroes, but Thor has already lived through his worst nightmares, and the God Blast drives Trigon back through his portal.
- Mental resilienceThor has already survived the losses Trigon shows him.
- God BlastLightning from every realm, focused into one strike.
- MjolnirThe hammer seals the portal Trigon came through.
How the rematch could go differently: A Trigon at full power in his own dimension, with no portal to be driven back through, could overwhelm even Thor.
