The Arena

Zamasu came to Apokolips because it was the darkest world he had ever sensed, a planet of slaves and fire pits, the perfect example of everything wrong with mortals. He intended to erase it. He found Darkseid sitting on his throne, watching him descend through the smoke with cold indifference.

“Mortals are a mistake,” Zamasu announced, his voice ringing across the fire pits. “And you are the worst of them.” Darkseid did not rise. “I am not a mortal,” he said, his voice like stone. “I am a New God. And you are a child playing at divinity.” Zamasu’s divine aura flared. “I am immortal. Nothing can harm me.”

Darkseid’s eyes began to glow red. “Everything,” he said slowly, “can be erased.”

Round One

Zamasu attacked with divine blades of light that cut through the palace of Apokolips like paper. Darkseid took one across the chest and did not move. Zamasu laughed and cut him again, and again, his immortal body untouched by the parademons who swarmed him, his wounds closing as fast as they opened.

Darkseid rose from his throne. He fired the Omega Beams, two red rays that curved through the air after their target. Zamasu dodged them, and they turned. He dodged again, and they turned again. He let one hit him, confident in his immortality, and felt something he had never felt before: a part of his arm was not wounded. It was gone.

It did not grow back. Zamasu stared at the empty space where his hand had been.

The Turn

Zamasu’s immortality had been designed to undo damage, to heal any injury, survive any blow. But the Omega Effect did not damage. It erased things from existence, sent them to a place outside reality, and there was nothing left for his immortal body to heal. For the first time since he had wished for eternal life, Zamasu felt fear.

He fused his power with the divine light of a Supreme Kai and attacked with everything he had, a wave of holy light that tore through the fire pits and burned the parademons to ash. Darkseid took the full force of it and staggered. Black blood ran down his stony face.

Then he raised his eyes, and the Omega Beams came again, not two, but dozens.

The Finish

Zamasu fled through the fire pits, dodging and twisting, and the beams followed him through every turn. One took his leg. Another took his halo. He fell to the ground, his immortal body unable to replace what had been erased, and lay there, trembling, staring up at the approaching god.

Darkseid stood over him. “You wanted to erase mortals because they disgusted you,” he said. “I do not erase them. I rule them. That is the difference between a god and a child with power.” Zamasu spat at him. “I am immortal.” Darkseid’s eyes glowed one last time. “You were.”

He did not erase him completely. He chained the broken immortal in the deepest pit on Apokolips, where he would live forever, unable to die, as a reminder to every slave on the planet of what happened to gods who defied Darkseid. Zamasu screamed for a very long time. On Apokolips, nobody listened.

The verdict

Darkseid wins

Zamasu’s immortality lets him survive almost anything, but the Omega Effect does not wound, it erases, and an immortal body cannot heal what no longer exists.

  • The Omega EffectBeams that erase rather than damage, bypassing immortality.
  • TrackingThe beams follow Zamasu through every dodge.
  • ExperienceDarkseid has ruled and fought for millennia.

How the rematch could go differently: A fused Zamasu who learned to spread himself across reality the way he did in his own timeline could outlast even the Omega Effect.
