The Arena

Darkseid had searched for the Anti-Life Equation for millennia, the formula that would strip every living being of free will and hope. When his scientists detected a source of pure, limitless willpower in another universe, a power called spiral energy, he opened a Boom Tube and went to take it.

He found Simon standing on the head of Gurren Lagann, arms crossed, staring up at the stars. Darkseid stepped out of the Boom Tube onto a nearby rock. “Your power is the opposite of everything I seek,” he said. “I will extinguish it.” Simon pointed at him dramatically. “You think you can stop my drill? Who do you think I am?”

Darkseid’s eyes began to glow red. Simon jumped into the cockpit.

Round One

Darkseid fired the Omega Beams. They curved through space after Gurren Lagann, and Simon dodged, and they turned, and he dodged again. One hit the robot’s arm and erased it from existence. Simon gritted his teeth, and the arm grew back, bigger, with a bigger drill.

Darkseid frowned. The Omega Effect erased things. They were not supposed to grow back. But spiral power is not matter. It is the will to evolve, to keep going, to break through, and every time something was taken from Simon, his will to replace it made it stronger.

Simon drilled straight into Darkseid’s chest. The God of Apokolips staggered back for the first time in centuries.

The Turn

Darkseid reached into Simon’s mind and spoke the fragment of the Anti-Life Equation he had found, a formula that tells the mind: there is no hope, there is no point, there is nothing left. For one terrible second, Simon felt it work. His hands slipped from the controls. Gurren Lagann went still.

He remembered his brother Kamina, dying with a grin on his face. He remembered Nia. He remembered every person who had ever believed in him when he did not believe in himself. “My drill,” Simon whispered, “is the drill that creates the heavens.”

His hands gripped the controls again. Spiral energy exploded out of the cockpit, and the Anti-Life Equation shattered like glass.

The Finish

Gurren Lagann grew. Larger than Apokolips. Larger than the solar system. Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann looked down at the God of Evil from the size of a galaxy, and Darkseid, for the first time in his long existence, understood the scale of what he had challenged.

Simon reached down with a drill the size of a nebula and stopped it a breath from Darkseid’s face. He did not strike. “You tried to take away everyone’s hope,” he said. “But hope isn’t a formula. You can’t solve it. You can only keep going.”

He withdrew the drill and sent Darkseid back through his Boom Tube to Apokolips. Darkseid sat on his throne for a long time afterwards, staring at nothing. The Anti-Life Equation, he decided, had a flaw he had never accounted for. Some people simply refused to give up.

The verdict

Simon wins

The Omega Effect erases things and the Anti-Life Equation crushes hope, but spiral power is the will to keep going itself, it regrows what is erased, and it breaks the equation from the inside.

  • Spiral powerSimon’s will to evolve replaces what the Omega Effect erases.
  • HopeHe breaks the Anti-Life Equation with his own resolve.
  • ScaleSTTGL dwarfs even Apokolips.

How the rematch could go differently: A Darkseid who used the complete Anti-Life Equation, not just a fragment, might finally find a mind it can break.

Who do you think wins?

Who would win in a fight between Simon and Darkseid?

Simon wins. The Omega Effect erases things and the Anti-Life Equation crushes hope, but spiral power is the will to keep going itself, it regrows what is erased, and it breaks the equation from the inside.
