The Arena
Darkseid had conquered worlds and enslaved peoples, and when he found a way into another multiverse, he decided to take not just its planets but the universe itself. He learned that this universe had a living embodiment, a being called Eternity, and he went looking for it with the Omega Effect burning in his eyes.
He did not have to look far. Every star around him flickered, and a vast silhouette appeared in the void, its body made of galaxies, its face calm and ancient. “You seek me,” said Eternity, its voice coming from every direction at once. “You are already inside me. You have been since you arrived.”
Darkseid looked at the cosmic figure and smiled coldly. “Then I will conquer you from within.”
Round One
Darkseid fired the Omega Beams, and they struck a galaxy in Eternity’s shoulder. The galaxy vanished. Eternity flinched, and across the universe, every star dimmed for a moment. Darkseid saw it and laughed. He fired again, erasing nebulae, black holes, entire clusters of stars from the body of the universe.
Eternity did not fight back immediately. It looked at Darkseid with something like sorrow. “Every star you erase holds worlds,” it said. “People who will never know why their sky went dark.” Darkseid did not care. He never has.
Then Eternity moved, and every particle of space around Darkseid moved with it.
The Turn
Gravity turned against Darkseid. Space folded around him. Time slowed, then sped up, then reversed. Every law of physics in the universe was part of Eternity’s body, and every one of them could be used as a weapon. Darkseid’s Boom Tube refused to open. His Omega Beams curved back toward him.
He reached for the Anti-Life Equation, the formula that breaks the will of any being. He spoke it into the void, and Eternity listened, and the stars flickered. “That,” said Eternity softly, “is a formula for minds. I am not a mind. I am everything minds exist within.”
For the first time, Darkseid understood the scale of what he had challenged.
The Finish
Eternity closed around him. Not violently, but completely, the way the night sky closes around a single star. Darkseid fought with every ounce of his god-power, the Omega Effect blazing, and it made no more difference than a candle makes against the dark.
He found himself floating, motionless, in an empty pocket of space, unable to move, unable to erase, unable to escape. Eternity looked down at him with a face made of galaxies. “You wanted to rule a universe,” it said. “But a universe is not something to be ruled. It is something to be part of.”
Eternity returned Darkseid to Apokolips, intact, and restored every star he had erased. Darkseid sat on his throne for a long time, staring at the sky of his own universe, aware for the first time that it, too, might be watching him back.
