The Arena

Galactus arrived above a planet full of life, its people looking up in terror at the giant in purple and blue, his helmet towering over the clouds. He had come to feed. He always came to feed. Then a voice crackled across every radio on the planet, young, loud and absolutely certain. “Hey! Big guy! Back off!”

Galactus turned. Hovering in space was a small red-and-blue robot with a huge grinning face on its chest and a drill for a hand. Inside it, Simon gripped the controls, his cape flowing, his star-shaped sunglasses gleaming. “Who do you think I am?” he shouted.

Galactus looked down at the tiny robot. “An insect,” he said, “that does not understand the scale of what it faces.” Simon grinned wider. “Funny. I was going to say the same thing.”

Round One

Galactus fired a beam of the Power Cosmic, enough to boil an ocean. It hit Gurren Lagann and blew off one of its arms. Simon spun the robot around and drilled forward, his spiral power surging, and the arm grew back, bigger than before, with a bigger drill.

He crashed into Galactus’s chest, and the drill scraped against his armour, throwing sparks across space. Galactus swatted him away like a fly, sending Gurren Lagann tumbling past a moon. Simon caught himself, laughing, and his spiral power kept rising.

The robot began to grow. The bigger the challenge, the stronger spiral power gets, and Galactus was the biggest challenge Simon had faced in a long time.

The Turn

Gurren Lagann combined with a battleship, becoming Arc-Gurren Lagann, the size of a city. Then it combined with a planet-sized mecha, becoming Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, bigger than a star. Galactus, for the first time in his ancient existence, looked up at something.

Simon looked down at the Devourer of Worlds through the cockpit. “Your hunger is a big deal,” he said. “But my drill is the drill that will pierce the heavens.” He reached into space, grabbed a nearby galaxy, and folded it into a giant spiral shuriken.

Galactus stared. He had eaten planets. He had never seen anyone throw a galaxy.

The Finish

The galaxy shuriken hit Galactus and threw him across a light-year of space. He fired the full Power Cosmic, enough to end a star, and Simon met it with a drill made of pure spiral energy, the Giga Drill Break, and the drill pierced the beam, pierced the armour, and stopped a hand’s width from the Devourer’s chest.

Galactus floated in space, the drill pointed at his heart, and did not move. Simon spoke quietly now, without shouting. “I’m not going to destroy you. But you’re going to leave this planet alone. And the next one. You can eat dead stars. There’s plenty of those.”

Galactus looked at the enormous drill for a long time, then at the tiny planet full of life behind it. “You would defy hunger itself,” he said slowly. Simon grinned. “I defy everything. That’s my whole thing.” Galactus turned away and drifted off toward the dead stars. The planet below cheered so loudly it could be heard in space.

The verdict

Simon wins

Galactus devours worlds with the Power Cosmic, but Simon’s spiral power grows with every challenge, and Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is so large it throws galaxies.

  • Spiral powerIt grows stronger the greater the challenge.
  • ScaleSTTGL is larger than galaxies.
  • Giga Drill BreakA drill that pierces even the Power Cosmic.

How the rematch could go differently: A Galactus who devoured the planet before Simon’s spiral power could grow would never face the galaxy-sized version.

Who do you think wins?

Who would win in a fight between Simon and Galactus?

Simon wins. Galactus devours worlds with the Power Cosmic, but Simon’s spiral power grows with every challenge, and Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is so large it throws galaxies.
