The Arena
Galactus arrived above the Earth, a giant in purple and blue armour the size of a city, and announced to the planet that it would be consumed. Every hero on Earth looked up in horror. In City Z, a bald man in a yellow suit looked up from the supermarket queue, frowned, and checked his watch. The sale ended at six.
He jumped. He jumped all the way into orbit, which nobody had told him was impossible, and landed on the edge of Galactus’s giant helmet. “Hey,” Saitama said. “Can you not? I have to get groceries.” Galactus looked down at the tiny figure standing on his helmet. “You are an insect,” he said.
Saitama shrugged. “Okay. But you’re still in the way.”
Round One
Galactus brushed him off his helmet like a speck of dust, and Saitama floated in space for a moment, looking around. He did not seem to need to breathe. Nobody understood that either. Galactus fired a beam of the Power Cosmic, enough to boil an ocean, and it hit Saitama full on.
When it faded, Saitama was still there, floating in space, his cape slightly singed. He looked down at himself, then up at Galactus. “That was kind of warm,” he said. Galactus stared at him. In billions of years, nothing had ever survived a direct blast from the Power Cosmic without even a scratch.
Galactus tried again, harder. Saitama yawned.
The Turn
Galactus reached out with the Power Cosmic to do what he does to every world: drain it, consume its energy, absorb its life. He reached into Saitama and began to drink. Then he stopped, confused. Saitama’s body was ordinary. Human. There was almost nothing there to consume.
And yet, somewhere inside that ordinary body, there was something Galactus could not reach at all: a strength with no bottom and no top, a limit that had been broken long ago through a hundred push-ups, a hundred sit-ups, a hundred squats and a ten-kilometre run every single day. Galactus pulled back, unsettled.
“Are you done?” Saitama asked. “Because I have to go.”
The Finish
Saitama drew back his fist and threw a normal punch. Not a serious one. Just a normal punch. It hit Galactus in the chest, and the Devourer of Worlds flew backwards out of Earth’s orbit, past the moon, past Mars, and disappeared somewhere beyond the asteroid belt.
Saitama fell back to Earth, landed in the supermarket car park, and walked inside. The queue had moved. He had lost his place. The sale was over. He stood there, staring at the empty shelf where the discounted cabbages had been, and sighed deeply.
Somewhere beyond the orbit of Jupiter, Galactus slowly stopped tumbling, looked back at the tiny blue planet, and decided that he was not actually that hungry after all. On Earth, nobody ever found out who had saved them. Saitama bought full-price cabbages and complained about it all the way home.
