The Arena
Galactus followed a trail of dying universes, each one emptied of matter, through a crack in the walls of reality. At the end of it, he found the cause: a giant armoured figure glowing with antimatter, its hands buried in the heart of a universe, drinking it dry. The Anti-Monitor looked up.
“Another hungry one,” the Anti-Monitor said, amused. “But you eat planets. I eat realities.” Galactus drew himself up to his full, immense height. “I consume to survive, and only what I must. You consume everything.” The Anti-Monitor laughed. “Then let us see whose hunger is greater.”
He released the dying universe, and it collapsed into darkness behind him.
Round One
Galactus struck first with the Power Cosmic, a blast that could boil a star, and it hit the Anti-Monitor full on. The antimatter giant staggered back, his armour scorched. Then he raised his hands and fired a wave of antimatter, and Galactus felt his own body begin to unravel where it struck.
They fought in the void between universes, two vast beings trading blows that shattered dimensions. Galactus was ancient and powerful, the last survivor of the universe before this one. The Anti-Monitor was powered by every reality he had ever consumed.
With every blow Galactus landed, the Anti-Monitor drew more power from the dying universes around them, and grew stronger.
The Turn
Galactus reached out with the Power Cosmic to do what he does to every world: consume it, absorb its energy, make it part of himself. He reached into the Anti-Monitor’s antimatter body and began to drink. Then he recoiled in agony.
Antimatter cannot be consumed. It annihilates whatever it touches. Galactus had tried to eat a black hole made of anti-reality, and it was eating him back. He pulled away, his body wounded, his Power Cosmic flickering.
The Anti-Monitor laughed. “You see? You are a predator of planets. I am a predator of predators.”
The Finish
The Anti-Monitor surged forward, and his antimatter wrapped around Galactus, draining the Power Cosmic, unravelling the Devourer of Worlds layer by layer. Galactus fought with all his ancient strength, and nearly broke free twice. But the Anti-Monitor had a hundred dead universes behind him, and Galactus had only himself.
At last Galactus fell to his knees in the void, his helmet cracked, his power nearly gone. The Anti-Monitor stood over him, prepared to finish him and drink the last of his energy. Then he paused, and something cold and curious flickered in his eyes.
“You are the last of your universe,” he said. “I am the end of all of them. Perhaps one day I will need a herald.” He left Galactus alive in the void and turned back to the dying universes. Galactus watched him go, weaker than he had been in a billion years, and for the first time, he understood how the planets felt.
The verdict
The Anti-Monitor wins
Galactus is ancient and immensely powerful, but the Anti-Monitor draws on every universe he has ever devoured, and antimatter cannot be consumed: it annihilates whatever tries.
- AntimatterGalactus cannot consume it; it consumes him instead.
- Power sourceA hundred devoured universes stand behind the Anti-Monitor.
- Scale of hungerUniverses, not planets.
How the rematch could go differently: A Galactus at the peak of his power, freshly fed and armed with the Ultimate Nullifier, could erase even the Anti-Monitor.
