The Arena
Ghost Rider was hunting a demon who had escaped from Hell and slipped through a rift into another world, and the trail led him to a broken highway on the edge of a dark, twisted land. Standing in the middle of the road with his hands in his pockets was a teenager in a green school uniform, chewing gum.
“You’re a demon,” the Rider growled, his voice like grinding gravel. Yusuke Urameshi blew a bubble and popped it. “Half demon, technically. My dad was a demon king. Long story.” The Rider’s chain began to glow with hellfire. “The demon blood in you reeks of sin.” Yusuke cracked his knuckles. “Yeah, I get that a lot.”
The Rider gunned his motorcycle and charged straight at him. Yusuke grinned.
Round One
Yusuke jumped over the bike, landed on the hood of an abandoned truck and pointed his finger like a gun. “Spirit Gun!” A blast of blue energy shot out and hit the Rider square in the chest, knocking him off his motorcycle. The Rider got up, his flames burning higher. Yusuke whistled. “Okay. Tough guy.”
The Rider lashed his chain, and Yusuke ducked under it and punched him in the jaw. The skull did not even crack. The Rider grabbed him by the collar and slammed him into the asphalt, hellfire burning through his uniform. Yusuke yelled and kicked him off, his shirt smouldering.
They brawled down the highway, Yusuke’s street-fighter punches against the Rider’s brutal, burning strikes. Both of them were having a much harder time than they had expected.
The Turn
The Rider caught Yusuke by the throat, lifted him off the ground and stared into his eyes. “Look into my eyes,” he said. The Penance Stare. Yusuke felt every punch he had ever thrown, every kid he had ever bullied, every fight he had started just because he was bored. It hurt. A lot.
But it was not the endless horror the Stare usually brings. Yusuke had been a delinquent, not a murderer. Most of the people he had beaten up had been trying to beat him up first. He gasped, shook his head, and grinned through the pain. “That’s it? You should see my mom’s lectures.”
The Rider stared at him, confused. The demon blood had smelled like sin, but the soul beneath it was not what he had expected at all.
The Finish
Yusuke used the moment of confusion. His demon blood woke up, long hair spilling down his back, tribal markings spreading across his skin, his spirit energy and demon energy fusing into something enormous. He raised his finger one last time. “SPIRIT GUN!” The blast was the size of a building.
It hit the Rider and carried him down the highway, through three abandoned cars and into a cliff face. When the blue light faded, the Spirit of Vengeance lay in the rubble, his flames flickering, too weak to rise. His motorcycle lay on its side, its engine sputtering.
Yusuke walked over, his demon form fading, and held out a hand. “Look, I’m not the guy you’re hunting. The demon you want went that way, and he’s way worse than me.” The Rider took his hand, rose and looked at him for a long moment. Then he got on his bike and roared off in the right direction. Yusuke watched him go, then realised the Rider had taken his gum.
The verdict
Yusuke Urameshi wins
Ghost Rider is incredibly durable and his hellfire hurts, but the Penance Stare works poorly on Yusuke, whose sins are mostly street fights, and his demon-powered Spirit Gun overwhelms the Rider.
- Penance Stare immunityYusuke carries very little real guilt for the Stare to use.
- Demon bloodHis demon form multiplies his power.
- Spirit GunA full-power blast is devastating against a spirit.
How the rematch could go differently: A Ghost Rider who kept the fight at range with his chain and never got pulled into a brawl could outlast Yusuke.
