The Arena
Mark Grayson was chasing an interdimensional criminal when the portal closed behind him and left him hovering over a canyon in a world of giant stone faces and ninja villages. Before he could get his bearings, a blond man in an orange coat landed on a rock in front of him, grinning, a Hokage’s cloak flapping behind him.
“Hey! You just flew over my village without permission!” said Naruto Uzumaki cheerfully. “That makes you either a really cool guy or a really bad guy. Which one is it?” Mark, who had been asked that question by his own father in the worst possible way, flinched. “I’m one of the good ones,” he said. “I think.”
Naruto studied him for a long moment, then cracked his knuckles. “Only one way to find out, believe it!”
Round One
Mark hit first, because Viltrumite instinct is fast, and the punch sent Naruto crashing through a canyon wall. Mark winced. He had not meant to hit that hard. Then the dust cleared, and there were fifty Narutos standing in the rubble, all of them grinning. “Shadow Clone Jutsu!”
They swarmed him from every side. Mark tore through them at supersonic speed, each clone vanishing in a puff of smoke, but there were always more, and every one he destroyed sent its memories back to the original. Naruto was learning how Mark fought with every clone that fell.
Then a real Naruto came out of the smoke with a spinning sphere of chakra in his palm and drove a Rasengan straight into Mark’s stomach.
The Turn
Mark recovered and got serious. He was faster than anything in this world, and he began to hit Naruto with blows that cracked the canyon floor, the kind of punches that had stopped Viltrumite warriors. Naruto bled, staggered and kept getting up, grinning through a split lip.
Then his eyes turned orange, ringed like a toad’s, and then red and slit-pupilled. Golden chakra blazed around him, and a giant fox made of light rose behind him in the canyon. Kurama yawned. “This is the kid who’s giving you trouble?”
Mark stared up at a fox the size of a mountain and, for the first time since the fight began, wondered whether he should have stayed home.
The Finish
Mark charged anyway, because that is what he does. He punched Kurama’s chakra armour hard enough to send shock waves through the canyon, and the fox barely flinched. Naruto created a hundred clones in Sage Mode and Nine-Tails Mode at once, and every one of them formed a Rasengan the size of a house.
The Planetary Rasengan hit Mark from every angle at once and drove him deep into the canyon floor. When the light faded, the Viltrumite lay in a crater, his suit shredded, too battered to rise. Naruto dropped out of the fox mode and sat down beside him, breathing hard.
“You never stopped getting up,” Naruto said, smiling. “Not once. That’s how I knew you were one of the good ones.” Mark laughed weakly, then winced. “Is that why you kept punching me?” Naruto grinned. “Nope. That was just fun. Want some ramen?”
