The Arena

Madara Uchiha was resurrected in the wrong place: not on his own battlefield, but on a desolate plain beneath a purple sky, where a giant figure in golden armour sat on a throne of rock, studying a glowing gauntlet with six stones in it. Thanos looked up. “Another one who wishes to save the world,” he said, almost kindly.

Madara smiled coldly. “Save it? No. I will end its suffering. Every living thing will dream forever in a perfect world, the Infinite Tsukuyomi.” Thanos stood up, all eight feet of him. “I tried that once. A perfect world. It never holds.” Madara’s Rinnegan flared. “Then you did not try hard enough.”

Two men who were certain they were right, on a battlefield with nobody to stop them.

Round One

Madara opened by doing what he does best. He raised one hand, and a meteor the size of a mountain appeared in the sky, falling toward the plain. Then a second one behind it. Thanos looked up, raised the gauntlet, and the Power Stone shattered the first meteor into gravel. The second he caught with the Space Stone and dropped into a distant sea.

Madara was impressed and unworried. He summoned his perfect Susanoo, a blue armoured giant tall enough to touch the clouds, and swung its sword at Thanos. The blade cut through mountains. Thanos took it on the gauntlet, and the stones flared, and the blade stopped dead.

“I have seen gods,” Thanos said. “You are not one.”

The Turn

Madara absorbed the Ten-Tails into his own body, becoming its jinchuriki, and his power rose to a level that made the sky tremble. Black truth-seeking orbs orbited behind him, spheres that could erase anything they touched. He threw one at Thanos, and it tore a hole through the Titan’s armour and into his shoulder.

Thanos grunted in pain, looked at the wound, and for a moment, considered his opponent properly for the first time. Then the Time Stone glowed, and the wound reversed itself. Madara frowned. He had faced healing before. He had never faced time.

He cast his ultimate technique anyway, raising his Rinnegan to the moon to begin the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Thanos looked up, curious.

The Finish

The moon began to glow red, and the dream began to fall over the world. Thanos felt it touch his mind and simply pushed it away with the Mind Stone. Then he reached out with the Reality Stone and changed the light. The red glow became harmless moonlight, and Madara’s greatest technique faded into nothing.

Madara stared at the sky in disbelief. Thanos closed the gauntlet. The Power Stone hit Madara with a force that cracked his Susanoo like glass. The Space Stone pinned him to the ground. The Soul Stone looked into him and found a man who had once had a brother and a dream, and buried them both under a thousand years of anger.

Thanos knelt beside him. “I know what you wanted,” he said. “I wanted it too. It never works.” He snapped his fingers, and Madara was sent back to the land of the dead, at peace for the first time since he had awoken. Thanos returned to his throne, alone again, and looked at the empty sky for a long time.

The verdict

Thanos wins

Madara as a Ten-Tails jinchuriki is terrifying and wounds Thanos badly, but the Infinity Gauntlet controls reality, time, space, mind and soul, and it can undo even the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

  • The Infinity GauntletSix stones that control every aspect of existence.
  • Time StoneThanos can reverse wounds Madara inflicts.
  • Mind StoneIt shields Thanos from the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

How the rematch could go differently: A Thanos without the gauntlet would be in serious trouble against a Ten-Tails Madara with meteors and truth-seeking orbs.
