The Arena
Magneto followed a strange signal to a battlefield in another world, a field of broken swords and kunai stretching to the horizon, the aftermath of a terrible war. Standing in the middle of it, his long black hair blowing in the wind, was a man in red armour with strange purple eyes.
“You feel it too,” Madara Uchiha said, without turning. “The weight of all the wars.” Magneto floated down, his cape stirring. “I survived the camps,” he said quietly. “I have seen what humanity does to those who are different.” Madara turned. “And I have seen what people do to their own clans. Peace is a lie they tell themselves.”
They looked at each other for a long moment, two old men who had seen too much. Then Magneto raised his hand, and every blade on the battlefield rose into the air.
Round One
Ten thousand swords and kunai hung in the air above the battlefield, every one aimed at Madara. Magneto brought his hand down, and they fell like rain. Madara’s Susanoo burst around him, a blue armoured giant of chakra, and the blades struck it and shattered against its surface.
Madara swung the Susanoo’s sword, and Magneto raised a shield of magnetic force that held, barely. He pulled iron from deep in the earth, forming a giant fist of molten metal, and smashed it into the Susanoo. The blue armour cracked.
Madara smiled for the first time in years. “You are strong,” he said. “But my power does not come from the earth.”
The Turn
Magneto’s power is control over metal and magnetism, and it is almost limitless. But Madara’s Susanoo is made of pure chakra, and Madara himself wore no metal at all. Magneto threw everything he had at the Susanoo, and it took every blow and kept coming. There was nothing in it for him to control.
Madara raised his hand to the sky. A meteor appeared above the battlefield, a mountain of rock falling from the clouds. Magneto reached for it with his power and found iron in its core, and with a tremendous effort, he slowed it, then stopped it, holding a falling mountain in the sky.
Madara watched, impressed. Then he called down a second meteor behind the first.
The Finish
Magneto held the first meteor. The second came down beside it, and he reached for it too, holding two mountains in the sky with every ounce of his power, his body trembling, blood running from his nose. He could hold both. He could not hold both and defend himself at the same time.
Madara stepped through the battlefield in his Susanoo and stopped its giant sword at Magneto’s throat. Magneto looked at the blade, then at the two meteors he was holding above the battlefield. If he let them go, they would fall. Madara looked at him calmly. “Release them toward the sea,” he said. “And we will speak as men who have lost everything.”
Magneto let the meteors fall into the ocean, far from the battlefield. Madara let the Susanoo fade. They sat among the broken swords until nightfall, talking about the people they had lost and the world they had wanted to build. Neither of them changed the other’s mind. But for one night, neither of them was alone.
