The Arena
Goku sensed a power on another Earth that kept rising and rising with no ceiling, and he flew straight to it, grinning. He found a green giant in a desert canyon, smashing boulders and roaring at the sky. The Hulk turned and saw a small man in an orange gi landing on a rock nearby, waving cheerfully.
“Hi! I’m Goku! You’re really strong, right?” The Hulk stared at him. “Puny man talks too much.” Goku laughed. “Yeah, people say that. Wanna fight?” The Hulk’s eyes narrowed. Nobody ever asked the Hulk if he wanted to fight. They usually ran, or shot at him. “Hulk… wants to fight.”
Goku’s grin got even wider. He had found exactly what he was looking for.
Round One
The Hulk charged, and his first punch hit Goku so hard he flew across the canyon and through a mesa. Goku climbed out of the rubble, laughing, his gi torn. “Wow! That was awesome!” He flew back and punched the Hulk in the stomach. The Hulk slid back fifty metres, then roared with delight.
They traded blows across the desert, each punch shaking the ground for miles. The Hulk was stronger in base form, but Goku was faster and far more skilled, landing three blows for every one of the Hulk’s. The Hulk did not care. Every blow made him angrier, and angrier made him stronger.
Goku noticed the green giant growing larger. He grinned and went Super Saiyan.
The Turn
It became a race. The Hulk got angrier, and stronger. Goku went Super Saiyan Two, then Three. The Hulk got angrier still, his skin darkening, his punches shaking the earth for a hundred kilometres. Goku went Super Saiyan God, his hair turning red, and the canyon split in half beneath them.
They clashed in the sky, and for a long time neither could gain ground. The Hulk was the strongest there is, and the stronger Goku got, the more the Hulk wanted to smash him. Goku had never fought anyone whose power grew to match his own.
He loved it. He went Super Saiyan Blue, and the sky turned the colour of his aura.
The Finish
The Hulk was still rising, but Goku’s skill was the difference. He stopped trading blows and started moving faster than the Hulk could follow, landing precise strikes on the Hulk’s jaw, his ribs, the back of his head. The Hulk swung wildly and hit nothing. Then Goku fired a Kamehameha at point-blank range, and the Hulk was driven into the desert floor.
The Hulk lay in a crater, panting, his anger fading as exhaustion took over. He shrank slowly, back into a small, tired man with glasses. Bruce Banner looked up at the Saiyan standing at the edge of the crater. “Did… did he lose?” Bruce asked weakly.
Goku slid down into the crater and helped him up. “He was amazing! I’ve never fought anyone who kept getting stronger like that!” Bruce stared at him. Nobody had ever been happy to fight the Hulk. “Can he come back and fight me again sometime?” Goku asked. Bruce, for the first time in years, laughed.
