The Arena
An S-rank gate opened in the Nevada desert, and the American military sent the only weapon they thought could handle whatever came out of it. When Sung Jinwoo stepped through the gate, he found a green giant standing in the ruins of an abandoned town, breathing hard and very, very angry.
“Puny man come out of glowing door,” growled the Hulk. “Hulk smash puny man.” Jinwoo looked at the giant and felt his system shake with a warning he had seen only a few times. Power. Enormous power. And it was still rising. He raised his daggers. “Let us see.”
The Hulk clapped his hands together, and the shock wave flattened every building in the town.
Round One
Jinwoo dodged the shock wave and struck with his daggers, a dozen precise cuts in a second. The Hulk barely noticed. He swung, and Jinwoo dodged again, and the punch hit the ground and opened a canyon. Jinwoo summoned his shadows, a thousand soldiers pouring out of the ground around the green giant.
The Hulk loved it. He tore through the shadows by the hundred, grabbing knights and throwing them like toys, smashing Tusk into the dirt, punching Beru into the sky. The shadows rose again, and he smashed them again, laughing. “More! Hulk want more!”
Jinwoo watched carefully. Every time the shadows fell, the Hulk’s anger grew. And every time it grew, so did his strength.
The Turn
Jinwoo realised his strategy was failing. With every opponent he had ever faced, his shadows wore them down. But the Hulk was getting stronger with every soldier he crushed, his skin darkening, his punches shaking the desert harder each time. He was not tiring at all. He was warming up.
Jinwoo used Ruler’s Authority, the invisible force that had pinned gods to the ground, and pushed the Hulk down into the sand. For a moment, it worked. The Hulk sank to one knee, his muscles straining. Then he roared, and pushed back, and kept pushing, until Jinwoo felt his own power begin to crack.
The Hulk rose to his feet, glowing with rage. “HULK IS STRONGEST THERE IS!”
The Finish
He broke free of Ruler’s Authority and charged. Jinwoo used Shadow Exchange to escape, appearing across the desert, but the Hulk leapt three kilometres in a single bound and landed in front of him. Jinwoo struck with everything he had, every shadow at once, and the Hulk walked through them as if they were smoke.
One punch. It hit Jinwoo with the force of a falling mountain, and he flew across the desert, through three hills and into a canyon wall. His health crashed toward zero. He lay in the rubble, healing as fast as he could, and could not rise.
The Hulk landed beside him, then paused. He looked at the battered young man, at the shadows flickering weakly around him, and the anger slowly drained from his face. “Puny man strong,” he said grudgingly. “Not strong as Hulk.” Then he sat down in the desert and waited, peacefully, until Jinwoo could stand and go home.
The verdict
Hulk wins
Jinwoo’s endless shadow army wears down almost any opponent, but the Hulk has no limit to his strength, and every shadow he crushes makes him angrier and stronger, until even Ruler’s Authority cannot hold him.
- Limitless angerThe Hulk grows stronger the longer the fight lasts.
- DurabilityDaggers and shadows barely scratch him.
- Wrong strategyA war of attrition is the one fight the Hulk cannot lose.
How the rematch could go differently: A Jinwoo who ended the fight in the first few seconds, before the Hulk’s anger had time to build, could avoid ever facing his peak.
