The Arena
A blue gate opened in the snow of Midgard, the kind that opens in Sung Jinwoo’s world when a dungeon appears, and out stepped a young man in a long black coat, eyes glowing purple. Kratos was hunting nearby with his son, and the moment he saw the stranger, he felt the thousands of dead souls standing in the shadows behind him.
“Boy,” Kratos said to Atreus, “stay back.” Jinwoo looked at the bearded warrior with the axe and felt his own system flash a warning. A powerful enemy. Very powerful. He smiled faintly. “I have not had a real fight in a long time.” Kratos raised the Leviathan Axe. “You will not enjoy this one.”
Jinwoo raised his hand, and the shadows beneath him began to move.
Round One
Jinwoo fought alone at first, with two black daggers, moving so fast the snow did not have time to fall. Kratos blocked with his shield, countered with the axe, and caught Jinwoo across the shoulder with a frozen blade that should have taken his arm off. Jinwoo’s body absorbed it, and his health regenerated as he watched.
Kratos hit him with a punch that would have crushed a troll’s skull. Jinwoo flew back thirty metres and landed on his feet. He was enjoying himself. He had faced monarchs and dragons, but rarely a warrior with so much skill and so much rage.
He spoke a single word. “Arise.” And the shadows behind him rose.
The Turn
Igris the Red Knight drew his blade. Beru the ant king spread his wings and screamed. Tusk the giant orc raised his hands, and behind them a thousand shadow soldiers, knights and mages stepped out of the darkness and charged across the snow toward the Spartan.
Kratos met them with the Blades of Chaos, and they died in waves, cut down by the hundred, burning in Spartan fire. He was magnificent. Atreus watched from the rocks, terrified and proud. But each shadow that fell rose again a moment later, and Jinwoo stood calmly behind his army, watching Kratos tire.
Then Kratos roared, and his eyes turned red, and the Spartan Rage took him. For a moment, the shadow army fell back.
The Finish
In Spartan Rage, Kratos was unstoppable. He tore through Igris and Beru, smashed Tusk to the ground and charged at Jinwoo himself, faster than any of the shadows could follow. Jinwoo met him with his daggers, and they clashed in the snow, the shockwave of every blow knocking avalanches loose from the mountain.
But the rage burns out, and when it did, Kratos was exhausted, and Jinwoo was not. His shadows had already risen again around them, a thousand strong. Jinwoo struck with Ruler’s Authority, an invisible force that pinned Kratos to the ground and held him there, the god-killer unable to rise.
Jinwoo walked over and looked down at him. His system offered him the chance to extract Kratos’s shadow, to make the god of war his soldier forever. He looked at Atreus, crying on the rocks, and declined. “Your son is waiting,” he said, releasing the pressure. “Go home to him.” Kratos rose slowly, and nodded once, and did.
The verdict
Sung Jinwoo wins
Kratos is the better warrior one-on-one and his Spartan Rage tears through the shadow army, but Jinwoo has an endless supply of soldiers who rise again, his own regeneration, and Ruler’s Authority to finish an exhausted god.
- Shadow armyThousands of soldiers who return every time they fall.
- EnduranceJinwoo outlasts the Spartan Rage.
- Ruler’s AuthorityInvisible force that can pin even a god in place.
How the rematch could go differently: Kratos in his Norse prime with the Blades of Olympus could cut through the shadows and reach Jinwoo before the army rises.
