The Arena

A blue gate opened on a rocky plain in Britannia at exactly eleven fifty-nine in the morning, and Sung Jinwoo stepped out into the light. Standing on a rock in the middle of the plain was a giant of a man with an axe on his shoulder and a sun glowing behind his head. “Who dares stand before me?” Escanor boomed.

Jinwoo’s system flashed a red warning, the strongest he had seen in a long time. The man’s power was rising by the second as the sun climbed higher. Jinwoo checked the time, did the maths, and smiled faintly. “Someone with time to spare,” he said.

The sun reached its peak. Escanor became The One. The ground beneath him turned to glass.

Round One

Escanor swung Rhitta, and a wave of heat and force crossed the plain like a falling star. Jinwoo dodged with his full speed, but the edge of it caught him and threw him a hundred metres, his coat smoking. He landed, healing, and realised he could not match this man at noon. Nobody could.

He called his shadows. Igris, Beru and a hundred knights rose from the ground and charged. Escanor raised one finger, and a tiny sun formed above it. Cruel Sun. It fell among the shadows and burned them all to nothing, a hundred soldiers wiped out in a single blast.

Jinwoo did not panic. His shadows do not die. He watched them reform in the darkness beneath his feet and waited.

The Turn

Jinwoo understood Escanor’s power the way he understood every dungeon boss: its pattern, its cost and its weakness. The One lasts a minute. Then the sun begins to fall, and with it, Escanor’s strength. So Jinwoo stopped trying to win and started trying to survive.

He sent wave after wave of shadows, never attacking directly, always making Escanor waste his power burning them away. Every time the shadows burned, they rose again. Every time Escanor swung, Jinwoo was somewhere else, his Shadow Exchange letting him swap places with a shadow across the plain in an instant.

Escanor grew irritated. “Coward! Stand and face me!” Jinwoo smiled from a hundred metres away. “I am facing you. I am just patient.”

The Finish

Hours passed. The sun crossed the sky, and with every hour Escanor’s power fell. By late afternoon, he was still enormously strong, but no longer The One, and Jinwoo’s shadows were still rising, as fresh as the moment the fight began. As the sun touched the horizon, Jinwoo finally attacked.

He came in with all his power and his entire army at once, a thousand shadows surging over the plain. Escanor fought magnificently, but his strength was fading with the light, and Jinwoo’s Ruler’s Authority pinned him to the ground just as the sun disappeared below the horizon.

In the darkness, Escanor shrank back into a thin, gentle man with a moustache, who looked up at Jinwoo in horror and apologised for everything he had said. Jinwoo released him and helped him up. “You were the strongest person I have ever faced,” he said honestly. “For about a minute.” Escanor blushed and offered to pour him a drink.

The verdict

Sung Jinwoo wins

At noon Escanor is untouchable, but his power is tied to the sun and fades with every hour, while Sung Jinwoo’s shadow army never tires and lets him outlast the day.

  • The clockEscanor’s strength falls with the sun; Jinwoo’s does not.
  • Endless shadowsHis soldiers rise again every time they are burned.
  • Shadow ExchangeInstant teleportation keeps Jinwoo away from Escanor at his peak.

How the rematch could go differently: A fight forced to end within a minute of noon would belong to Escanor, and nobody in Jinwoo’s world could save him.
