The Arena

Doomsday tore its way out of a containment pod that had crash-landed in the New Mexico desert, smashing through the military cordon around it and walking toward the nearest town with no purpose except destruction. The army had a single plan for something like that, and the plan was green.

Bruce Banner was dropped from a helicopter two kilometres in front of the creature. He was already angry by the time he hit the ground. By the time Doomsday reached him, he was the Hulk, and he was smiling.

Round One

They collided like two freight trains meeting head-on at full speed. The shock wave flattened every cactus for a kilometre and threw sand into the sky in a cloud the size of a storm front. Doomsday’s bony spikes tore lines across the Hulk’s chest. The Hulk’s first punch broke three of those spikes clean off.

For ten minutes the desert shook as if it were being bombed. Doomsday was relentless and impossibly tough, every blow it threw strong enough to level a building, every blow it took shrugged off with a roar. The Hulk was knocked flat into a crater, got up, and was knocked down again.

Each time he got up, he was angrier. And each time he was angrier, he was stronger.

The Turn

Doomsday’s nature is to adapt. Every injury makes it tougher, every defeat makes it return stronger. But it adapts to being killed, and the Hulk was not killing it. He was simply hitting it harder, and then harder, in an endless climbing spiral of rage with no upper limit.

Doomsday’s attacks began to bounce off skin that grew tougher by the minute. Its strength stayed the same while the Hulk’s doubled, and doubled again, the desert floor cracking under his feet with every step. For the first time since it was created, the monster hesitated.

The Finish

The Hulk caught Doomsday by both arms, lifted it over his head and slammed it into the ground so hard the impact registered on seismographs in three states. Then he did it again, and again, until the crater was fifty metres deep and the creature at the bottom of it did not move.

Doomsday was not dead. It never really is. But it was beaten, its body broken in a dozen places, buried under tons of rock, unable to rise. The military moved in with a new containment pod while the Hulk sat on the edge of the crater, breathing hard.

When a nervous general asked whether it was safe to approach, the Hulk looked at him, then down at the pit. “Hulk is strongest one there is,” he said. “Now monster knows too.” Then he walked off into the desert to be alone.

The verdict

Hulk wins

Doomsday is built to adapt and return stronger from every death, but the Hulk does not need to kill it: his strength keeps rising with his anger, without any limit, and eventually he simply overpowers it.

  • Limitless strengthThe Hulk’s power grows the longer and angrier the fight gets.
  • DurabilityHis skin becomes tougher as his rage builds.
  • Adaptation loopholeDoomsday adapts to being killed; the Hulk only beats it down.

How the rematch could go differently: If the fight ended quickly, before the Hulk built up his anger, Doomsday’s raw power and killing intent could put him down first.
