The Arena
Mark Grayson came to Chicago chasing a villain who could open portals, and the villain’s last portal dropped him in front of a masked figure in red and blue, crouched on the side of a building. Spider-Man had been chasing the same villain, and from where he was standing, the guy in the yellow and blue suit looked like an accomplice.
Peter tried words first. “Look, I don’t know who you are, but you’re going to want to put your hands up.” Mark, who had been lied to by everyone in his life, did not trust masks. He flew at him.
Round One
Spider-Man’s spider-sense screamed, and he flipped aside as Mark punched straight through the building where his head had been. Peter had fought fast opponents before. He had never fought one that strong. He webbed Mark’s face, swung behind him and landed a kick to the back of his head.
Mark barely noticed. He tore the webbing off and flew after Spider-Man through the streets of Chicago, crashing through billboards and bus stops, while Peter swung between buildings, trying to keep the fight away from civilians. Every time Mark closed in, the spider-sense warned Peter just in time.
The Turn
Spider-Man was smarter, more experienced and better at using his surroundings. He tied Mark to a water tower with layers of webbing, dropped a billboard on him, and once tricked him into flying straight into a steel bridge girder.
But Mark is half Viltrumite. He tore through every web, shrugged off the girder, and kept getting faster. The spider-sense kept warning Peter, and Peter kept moving, but eventually Mark moved faster than Peter could react, and a punch caught him in the ribs and sent him through a parked car.
The Finish
Peter got up, because Peter always gets up, but something in his side was broken. He fought on, landing a series of blows that would have knocked out any human, and Mark finally slowed down long enough to see the injured hero in front of him clearly.
He stopped. Spider-Man was holding his ribs, still standing, still in front of a crowd of civilians, protecting them. Not attacking. Protecting. Mark lowered his fists. “You’re not with him,” he said slowly. Peter laughed, then winced. “No, genius. I’ve been trying to tell you that for ten minutes.”
Mark caught Peter when he collapsed and flew him to a hospital. Then the two of them tracked down the portal villain together the next day, and Mark apologised so many times that Peter made him buy pizza.
The verdict
Invincible wins
Spider-Man is smarter, more experienced and his spider-sense keeps him alive for a long time, but Invincible can fly, is vastly stronger and more durable, and eventually becomes faster than Peter can react.
- Viltrumite powerMark’s strength and durability far exceed Spider-Man’s.
- FlightHe can chase Peter anywhere in the city.
- SpeedHe eventually outpaces even the spider-sense.
How the rematch could go differently: An early Mark, still learning his powers and unwilling to hit hard, could be outsmarted and webbed up by Spider-Man’s experience.
