The Arena

A star destroyer dropped out of hyperspace above Earth, damaged and drifting, and the X-Men’s sensors picked up a single life sign aboard: a mechanical, rasping heartbeat. Magneto went alone. He floated into the hangar bay through the open blast doors and found a tall figure in black armour waiting for him, a red blade humming at his side.

Darth Vader turned his masked face toward the intruder. He felt it at once: no Force, but a power of another kind, a hum in the metal all around them. “You are not a Jedi,” Vader said, his voice deep and mechanical. Magneto smiled thinly. “No. I am something far more dangerous to a man wearing a tin can.”

Vader raised his hand. Magneto raised his. In the hangar around them, every loose piece of metal began to tremble.

Round One

Vader struck first with the Force, and an invisible grip closed around Magneto’s throat. Magneto choked, rising off the ground, his hands clawing at nothing. He had faced telepaths and gods, but never a power like this, an ancient energy that flowed through all living things.

He fought back the only way he could. He pulled. Every TIE fighter in the hangar tore loose from its rack and flew at Vader like a swarm of iron birds. Vader released the choke and threw up his hand, stopping the fighters in mid-air with the Force, then flung them back. They crashed into the walls around Magneto in a storm of sparks.

They broke apart, both breathing hard. Magneto touched his bruised throat. Vader tilted his head, studying him. Then Magneto noticed something: the suit was mostly metal.

The Turn

Vader charged with his lightsaber, and Magneto did not try to stop the blade. He reached for the armour itself. Vader’s arm froze mid-swing, his mechanical hand locked in place. His breathing, that steady mechanical rhythm, stuttered. The suit that kept him alive was answering to someone else.

Vader roared and fought it with the Force, an immense surge of will that pushed against Magneto’s grip on every bolt and plate of the armour. For a moment, the two powers held each other perfectly, and the hangar floor buckled beneath them.

Magneto felt the suit’s life-support circuits beneath his grip, the machinery keeping a broken man breathing. He could crush them with a thought.

The Finish

He did not. He locked the armour instead, every joint frozen solid, and Vader sank to his knees in the middle of the hangar, unable to move a finger, held in his own suit like a statue. His lightsaber clattered to the deck and switched off.

Magneto floated down and stood in front of him. Through the black mask, he could hear the breathing, steady again, and something in it sounded almost like relief. “I know what it is to be made into a weapon,” Magneto said quietly. “And I know what it is to be the last of your people.”

He released the armour slowly. Vader stood up and did not reach for his saber. They looked at each other for a long moment, two men who had lost everything and turned their grief into power. Then Magneto turned and floated out of the hangar, and Vader let him go. Neither of them ever spoke of it again.

The verdict

Magneto wins

Vader’s Force is a match for Magneto’s power and nearly chokes him out early, but Vader’s suit is made of metal and keeps him alive, and that gives the master of magnetism control over the fight.

  • Metal suitMagneto can freeze Vader’s armour and control his life support.
  • RangeMagneto never needs to come within lightsaber reach.
  • Equal willThe Force can resist magnetism, but not everywhere at once.

How the rematch could go differently: A Vader who struck first and choked Magneto unconscious before he noticed the suit could win in seconds.
