The Arena
Master Roshi went fishing and drifted too far, and the current carried his boat to a misty island covered in swamp and gnarled trees. Sitting on a log by the water was a tiny green creature with long ears, eating soup from a wooden bowl. He looked at Roshi with ancient, amused eyes. “Visitor, I have. Rare, this is.”
Roshi pushed his sunglasses up and grinned. “Ho ho! You’re a funny little fella. You train people?” Yoda tilted his head. “Train them, I do. Many, I have trained.” Roshi chuckled. “Me too. Goku, Krillin, all the best.” Yoda set down his bowl. “Hmm. Test each other, perhaps we should.”
Roshi cracked his knuckles. Yoda picked up his walking stick, slowly, as though every bone in his small body ached. Roshi did not believe it for a moment.
Round One
Roshi struck first, a fast palm strike aimed at the little master’s head. Yoda was not there. He had flipped over Roshi’s head, landed on his shoulder, tapped him on the bald spot with his stick, and flipped away again before Roshi could turn around. Roshi spun, astonished. “How’d you do that?”
He tried again, faster, using every technique of the Turtle School. Yoda dodged them all, a green blur bouncing off trees and rocks, and whacked Roshi on the shins with his stick each time he passed. Roshi yelped. “Ow! Okay! Okay! No more holding back!”
He took off his shirt and flexed, and his small old body swelled into a mountain of muscle. Yoda raised his eyebrows. “Hmm. Impressive, that is.”
The Turn
Roshi cupped his hands. Blue light gathered between them, brighter and brighter. “Ka… me… ha… me… HA!” The beam roared across the swamp toward the tiny Jedi master, powerful enough to destroy a mountain.
Yoda raised one small, three-fingered hand. The beam stopped. It hung in the air in front of him, crackling, held by an invisible force. Roshi’s jaw dropped. Yoda closed his eyes, concentrated, and slowly turned the beam aside, sending it harmlessly up into the clouds, where it burst like a firework.
“Energy, it is,” Yoda said calmly. “And energy, the Force can move.” Roshi stared at him. In three hundred years of fighting, nobody had ever caught a Kamehameha in one hand.
The Finish
Roshi tried once more, a Max Power punch with everything he had. Yoda lifted him off the ground with the Force, turned him gently upside down and floated him over the swamp. Roshi dangled there, his muscles deflating, his sunglasses falling into the water.
“Okay, okay!” Roshi laughed. “You win, little guy! Put me down!” Yoda lowered him into the shallows with a small splash, then went back to his log and picked up his soup. After a moment, Roshi waded out, sat down beside him and wrung out his beard.
“How old are you, anyway?” Roshi asked. Yoda thought about it. “Nine hundred years, nearly.” Roshi whistled. “And I thought I was old.” Yoda offered him some soup. It tasted terrible. Roshi ate it anyway, because some lessons, he decided, were worth a bad meal.
The verdict
Yoda wins
Roshi is a master of martial arts whose Kamehameha could level a mountain, but Yoda is faster, more agile and controls the Force, which can catch and redirect energy itself.
- The ForceYoda can stop and redirect the Kamehameha.
- AgilityHis acrobatic style makes him almost impossible to hit.
- TelekinesisHe can lift Roshi off the ground and hold him there.
How the rematch could go differently: A Roshi who struck without warning, before Yoda could reach for the Force, could land the blow that matters.
