The Arena

Darth Vader followed a ripple in the Force to a ruined temple on a dead world, a place where something ancient and evil had been sealed. He found it sitting on a broken altar, a man with four eyes, black markings and two mouths, one on his face and one on his stomach, both grinning.

“A sorcerer of your own kind,” Sukuna said, looking at the dark armour with amusement. “But you are full of pain. I can smell it.” Vader ignited his lightsaber. “I did not come here to talk.” Sukuna laughed and stood up. “Good. Neither did I.”

The air in the temple turned cold. The Force and cursed energy pressed against each other, and the stone walls began to crack.

Round One

Vader struck first with the Force, hurling broken pillars at Sukuna, then charging with his lightsaber. Sukuna cut the pillars apart with invisible slashes, Dismantle, and met the lightsaber with his bare hand, coated in cursed energy. The blade burned into his palm. He laughed.

He was faster than Vader, and his slashes came from everywhere. Vader blocked many of them with the Force, a shield of will that turned the invisible cuts aside. Some got through. A long gash opened across Vader’s armour, sparks flying from the circuits beneath.

Vader answered with a Force choke, and for a moment Sukuna’s throat closed. Then Sukuna’s second mouth, on his stomach, laughed. He did not need to breathe the way humans do.

The Turn

Sukuna formed a sign with his hands. “Domain Expansion. Malevolent Shrine.” A shrine of skulls rose in the centre of the temple, and every surface within two hundred metres began to cut. Thousands of invisible blades fell on Vader at once.

Vader raised the Force around himself in a sphere, and for a few seconds it held. The blades shrieked against it. His armour sparked, his breathing quickened, his lightsaber flared. He was stronger in the Force than almost anyone who had ever lived, and he held off a Domain Expansion longer than Sukuna had ever seen anyone hold one.

But the shrine did not stop. It never stops. And slowly, the sphere began to crack.

The Finish

The Force shield broke. The slashes reached Vader, cutting through his armour, his cape, his life-support systems. He fell to one knee, his breathing ragged, his saber flickering. With his last strength, he hurled his lightsaber at Sukuna with the Force. It grazed the King of Curses across the cheek before he caught it.

Sukuna released his domain and looked down at the kneeling figure, the broken armour, the man inside it barely alive. He crouched in front of him, curious. “So much hatred,” he said. “And all of it pointed at yourself. How dull.”

He dropped the lightsaber in front of Vader and walked out of the temple, laughing. Vader lay among the ruins for a long time, his breathing slowly steadying, the Force flowing back into him. For the first time in many years, he had been defeated, and the strangest part was that he had been spared out of boredom.

The verdict

Ryomen Sukuna wins

Vader’s Force is strong enough to hold off Malevolent Shrine for longer than almost anyone, but Sukuna is faster, doesn’t breathe like a human, and his domain never stops cutting until the Force shield breaks.

  • Malevolent ShrineAn endless storm of cuts that wears down even the Force.
  • SpeedSukuna moves faster than Vader’s cybernetic body.
  • PhysiologyThe Force choke fails against a being with two mouths.

How the rematch could go differently: A Vader who used the Force to crush Sukuna before he could form his domain could end the fight early.
