The Arena

Magneto came through a dimensional tear onto a field of corpses and rusted armour under a red moon, and immediately felt something extraordinary. Somewhere ahead of him, walking through the fog, was an enormous amount of iron: plate armour, a mechanical arm and a sword so heavy it seemed to bend the magnetic field around it.

Guts emerged from the fog, Dragon Slayer on his shoulder, the Berserker Armour clinking with every step. He looked at the old man in the red helmet and purple cape floating above the battlefield. “Another apostle?” Magneto smiled faintly. “No. Something much worse, for you.”

Guts did not bother to answer. He had never once in his life asked a monster for its name. He raised his sword and charged.

Round One

Guts swung the Dragon Slayer, and Magneto raised one hand. The sword stopped in mid-air, as if it had hit a wall. Guts snarled and pushed with all his strength, muscles bulging, and the sword moved. One centimetre. Two. Magneto’s eyebrows rose. Few humans could resist his power at all.

Guts fired the cannon hidden in his mechanical arm. Magneto turned the cannonball around in mid-air and sent it back. Guts dodged, rolled through the mud and hurled a handful of throwing knives. Magneto deflected them all without looking, as easily as brushing away flies.

Guts paused, breathing hard, and realised what he was facing. Every weapon he owned was made of iron. Every piece of armour he wore. Even his arm.

The Turn

Magneto closed his hand. The Berserker Armour lifted Guts into the air like a puppet, and Magneto slammed him into the ground, into the side of a ruined tower, into the ground again. The armour that had protected Guts from apostles had become his cage.

Guts let the armour take over, the Berserker’s rage flooding his mind, and he fought the pull with impossible, inhuman strength, tearing himself out of Magneto’s grip for a moment and leaping at the old man with his sword raised high.

He got close enough for Magneto to see his eyes. Then Magneto peeled the mechanical arm off its socket and threw it across the field.

The Finish

Without his arm, Guts fell back into the mud, still fighting, still trying to rise. Magneto pulled the Dragon Slayer out of his remaining hand and drove it into the ground beside him like a gravestone. Then he folded the Berserker Armour inward just enough to pin Guts flat, unable to move a finger.

Guts lay there snarling, the armour’s rage still burning in his eyes. Magneto floated down beside him and looked at him for a long time. “You have been fighting monsters all your life,” he said quietly. “So have I. That is the only reason I am letting you live.”

He released the armour, returned the arm and lifted the Dragon Slayer back into Guts’s hand. Then he rose into the red sky and disappeared. Guts sat up in the mud, staring after him, and for the first time in years felt something very close to respect.

The verdict

Magneto wins

Guts is one of the toughest fighters in fiction and can even resist Magneto’s pull for a moment, but every weapon and piece of armour he owns is iron, so the master of magnetism controls the whole fight.

  • Hard counterGuts’s sword, armour and arm are all iron.
  • RangeMagneto never needs to come within sword reach.
  • ControlHe turns Guts’s own armour into a cage.

How the rematch could go differently: A Guts who fought without armour and with a non-metal weapon would be a far more dangerous problem.
