The Arena

Hal Jordan’s ring brought him to a dead moon in an unknown sector, following a distress signal that had stopped mid-word. Below him hung the remains of a world, cracked open like an egg. Floating above it, sipping wine in a hover pod, was a small white figure with a long tail, admiring the view.

“Ah, another visitor,” said Frieza, smiling pleasantly. “Are you here to surrender or to die? I find either equally entertaining.” Hal looked at the broken planet, then at the tyrant. “Neither,” he said. “I’m here to arrest you.” Frieza laughed so hard he nearly spilled his wine.

In brightest day, in blackest night, Hal thought, raising his fist. The ring blazed emerald, and for the first time in a long while, Frieza stopped laughing.

Round One

Frieza opened with a Death Beam, a finger-thin ray that has punched through warriors stronger than any human. Hal’s shield construct took it, cracked down the middle, and held. Frieza fired twenty more, faster than an eye could follow, and the shield buckled. One beam grazed Hal’s shoulder and burned straight through his uniform.

Hal answered with a construct of an enormous green fist, then a jet fighter that strafed Frieza with emerald missiles, then a cage. Frieza blasted through all three almost lazily, but he was impressed despite himself. Few beings in the universe could even keep up with him.

Frieza smiled a thin smile and began to transform. Horns grew. Then they vanished. His body turned smooth and white, and his power grew so high the dead moon began to crack.

The Turn

In his final form, Frieza was overwhelmingly faster and stronger. He slammed Hal into the moon’s surface again and again, and every hit cracked the ring’s protective aura. Then he rose into the sky and gathered a Supernova, a burning sphere of energy large enough to destroy the moon and everything on it.

“Fear me,” he said. “Everyone does in the end.” Hal looked up at the sphere and felt fear, real fear, crawling up his spine. Then he did what Hal Jordan does best. He felt the fear completely, and refused to let it decide anything.

The ring answered. A wall of green light, thicker than any construct he had ever made, rose to meet the Supernova and held it in the sky above them, burning but unbroken.

The Finish

Frieza poured more power into the attack, his face twisting with rage. Hal pushed back with everything his will could give. Slowly, impossibly, the green wall began to fold around the Supernova, swallowing it, until the burning sphere was trapped inside a green construct the size of a mountain.

Hal hurled it back. Frieza, who had never once in his life imagined his own power turned on him, took the full force of his own attack. When the light faded, the emperor lay in a crater, smoking, his armour shattered, too stunned to rise.

Hal wrapped him in green chains, constructs fed by sheer stubbornness. “You’re under arrest,” he said again, breathing hard. Frieza spat. “You can’t hold me forever.” Hal shrugged. “Don’t need forever. Just long enough to get you to Oa. The Guardians have a very boring cell waiting for you.”

The verdict

Green Lantern wins

Frieza is faster and far stronger in raw power, but the ring runs on will, and Hal’s defining trait is overcoming fear: the one weapon Frieza has always relied on most.

  • WillpowerThe ring grows stronger as Hal refuses to be afraid.
  • Versatile constructsShields, cages and weapons let Hal adapt to every attack.
  • ArroganceFrieza never imagines his own power could be turned back on him.

How the rematch could go differently: A Golden Frieza who stayed serious from the first second could overwhelm Hal before his willpower peaked.
