The Arena
The Thousand Sunny came out of a strange fog into a sea that none of the Straw Hats recognised, and almost immediately rammed a merchant ship that Atlantis had sworn to protect. Arthur Curry rose out of the waves on top of a column of water, trident in hand, looking extremely unimpressed.
Luffy leaned over the railing, eyes shining. “Woah! A fish guy with a fork! Are you a king? I’m gonna be King of the Pirates!” Arthur sighed. “I’m King of Atlantis. And you just hit a ship under my protection.” Luffy cracked his knuckles cheerfully. “Then let’s fight for it!”
Somewhere behind Luffy, Nami put her head in her hands. “He’s fighting a sea king. In the sea. He can’t swim.” Zoro shrugged. “He never thinks about that.”
Round One
Luffy stretched his arm across forty metres of open water and punched Arthur off his column of water with a Gum-Gum Pistol. Arthur was surprised by the force, flipped in mid-air, and landed on the deck of the merchant ship. Luffy launched himself after him, rubber limbs whipping out in a Gatling barrage that cracked the planks.
On deck it was a real fight. Arthur was stronger than any sea king, with a body built to survive the crushing deep. Luffy was faster, stranger and impossible to hurt with blunt force. The trident struck Luffy’s chest and simply bounced. “Rubber,” Luffy explained, grinning. Arthur blinked.
He switched to the trident’s points, and Luffy switched to Haki, his arms turning black and hard as steel. Steel met trident with a sound like a cannon.
The Turn
Luffy activated Gear Fourth, his body swelling into a bouncing armoured giant, and hit Arthur with a Kong Gun that sent the King of Atlantis skipping across the waves like a stone for nearly a kilometre. The Straw Hats cheered. For a moment, it looked as if the pirate would win.
Then Arthur stopped skipping. He sank into the water and the water welcomed him. His wounds felt lighter. His strength came back. And far below, answering a call no human could hear, the creatures of the deep began to rise.
Luffy bounced on the deck, waiting. “Hey! Where did you go?” The sea around the ships went very, very quiet.
The Finish
A wave taller than the Sunny’s mast rose behind the merchant ship and came down on the deck, sweeping Luffy off his feet and into the sea. Devil Fruit users sink like stones. Luffy’s Gear Fourth deflated instantly, his strength vanishing the moment the salt water touched him, and he went down without a sound.
Arthur dove after him at once. He caught the pirate by his red vest twenty metres below the surface and carried him up, a whale and two dolphins swimming beside them in an escort. He laid Luffy on the Sunny’s deck, where the pirate coughed up half the ocean and lay blinking at the sky.
“You won,” Luffy wheezed, and then, without any resentment at all: “That was so cool. Can the whale be my friend?” Arthur, despite himself, laughed. “Stay out of my waters,” he said. “Or at least learn to swim.” Luffy grinned. “Nope!”
The verdict
Aquaman wins
Luffy is faster and can hurt Aquaman badly, but every fight in the open ocean belongs to the King of Atlantis, and a single wave turns off every power Luffy has.
- Home terrainAquaman gets stronger in the water; Luffy loses all his strength in it.
- Command of the seaWaves and sea creatures answer Arthur’s call.
- DurabilityAquaman’s deep-sea body absorbs Gear Fourth and keeps going.
How the rematch could go differently: On dry land, far from any ocean, Luffy’s Gear Fourth and Haki would make this a very different fight.
