The Arena
A motorcycle wreathed in hellfire came roaring out of nowhere onto the empty motorway, its rider a blazing skull in a leather jacket. The Spirit of Vengeance had followed the scent of sin across worlds, and it had never smelled anything like this. Standing in the middle of the road, in a long red coat and wide-brimmed hat, was a man who reeked of blood.
Alucard smiled at the burning skull, all teeth. “Oh, how marvellous. A demon riding a bicycle.” Ghost Rider’s voice came out like grinding gravel. “You have killed thousands of innocents.” Alucard shrugged. “More, I think. I stopped counting around the fifteenth century.”
The Rider gunned the engine and charged. Alucard drew his pistols and laughed.
Round One
Alucard fired the Jackal, and the bullets punched clean through the Rider’s burning skull and out the back. The Rider kept coming. Alucard was impressed. He fired a dozen more, and they melted in the hellfire before they could land. The motorcycle slammed into him and dragged him a hundred metres down the motorway.
Alucard rose with half his body torn away and simply grew it back. The Rider lashed his burning chain around the vampire’s neck and swung him into a lorry. Alucard tore free and drove a hand through the Rider’s chest. Both of them stood up again.
Two creatures that could not be killed by normal means, tearing each other apart on an empty road. Alucard was having the time of his life.
The Turn
Alucard released his restraints. His body dissolved into shadows, and from those shadows poured the souls he had devoured: soldiers, hounds, monsters, thousands of lives bound to him forever. They swarmed the Rider, tearing at the hellfire, pulling him off his bike and burying him under their numbers.
The Rider burned them by the hundred, but there were always more. For a moment, the flaming skull vanished beneath a sea of shadows. Alucard laughed in a thousand voices at once. “Is this all the Spirit of Vengeance can do?”
From beneath the swarm, the Rider’s skull turned toward him, and its empty eyes began to glow.
The Finish
The Rider looked into Alucard’s eyes. “Look into my eyes,” he growled. The Penance Stare. It forces the guilty to feel every ounce of pain they have ever caused, every life they took, every scream, all at once. On most sinners, it is unbearable. Alucard had taken more lives than almost any being alive.
Every one of them hit him at once. Five hundred years of murder, war and slaughter, felt from the inside. The souls inside him turned on him too, each one forcing its last moment into his mind. Alucard screamed, a sound he had not made in centuries, and his shadows collapsed around him.
He fell to his knees on the wet asphalt, shaking, the smile finally gone from his face. The Rider stood over him, then turned his bike around. Some punishments do not need to be finished. Alucard knelt on the motorway for a long time after the roar of the engine had faded, remembering every face.
The verdict
Ghost Rider wins
Alucard is nearly immortal and can outlast almost any physical attack, but the Penance Stare does not attack his body; it turns his enormous history of killing against him, and no one in fiction carries more guilt.
- Penance StareThe more lives Alucard has taken, the more it hurts him.
- HellfireIt burns through Alucard’s familiars and melts his bullets.
- Mutual immortalityNeither can kill the other physically, so the spiritual attack decides it.
How the rematch could go differently: If Alucard felt no guilt at all, the Penance Stare might not work, and his army of souls could bury the Rider for good.
