The Arena
Ghost Rider had been sent by Mephisto to collect a soul that had been killing demons by the million, a soul so violent it was destabilising every hell in the multiverse. He rode his burning motorcycle down a highway of fire and found the Doom Slayer standing in the middle of the road, surrounded by the bodies of a thousand demons.
The Rider stopped his bike and climbed off, his chain glowing. “You have spilled an ocean of blood,” he growled. The Slayer did not answer. He reloaded his shotgun. The Rider raised his chain. “Your sins will burn.”
The Slayer pumped the shotgun. That was the only answer he ever gave.
Round One
The Slayer fired, and the blast blew the Rider’s skull clean off his shoulders. The skull rolled across the highway, still burning, and reattached itself to the body. The Rider lashed his chain around the Slayer’s arm and swung him into the burning road. The Slayer rose, shrugged off the flames and fired again.
They fought along the highway of fire, two creatures that hell could not destroy. The Rider’s hellfire burned through the Slayer’s armour. The Slayer’s weapons blew pieces off the Rider that kept growing back. Neither of them slowed down.
Then the Rider caught the Slayer by the throat and lifted him off the ground. “Look into my eyes,” he growled.
The Turn
The Penance Stare reached into the Slayer’s soul, searching for the pain of every innocent he had ever hurt, every life he had ever wrongly taken. It found a million deaths. It found an ocean of blood. And every single one of them belonged to a demon.
The Rider stared into the helmet, confused. The Penance Stare showed him the Slayer’s sins, and there were none. Only a man who had walked into hell alone, eons ago, because the demons had taken everything from him, and who had never stopped fighting since.
The Slayer broke free of the Rider’s grip, punched him in the skull hard enough to send it flying, and drew the Crucible.
The Finish
The Crucible was forged to kill the gods of hell, and the Spirit of Vengeance was a creature of hell. The red blade cut through the Rider’s hellfire like it was not there, and for the first time, the Rider felt real pain. He staggered back, his flames flickering.
The Slayer did not finish him. He stood over the kneeling Rider, the Crucible humming, and waited. The Rider looked up at him, and understood. They were the same kind of thing: vengeance given a body. The only difference was who they took vengeance on.
The Rider rose slowly, climbed onto his motorcycle and turned it around. He rode back to Mephisto and told him the soul could not be collected. When Mephisto asked why, the Rider said only, “Because hell does not own him. He owns hell.” Behind him, on the highway of fire, the shotgun kept firing.
The verdict
Doom Slayer wins
Ghost Rider’s hellfire hurts the Slayer and neither can kill the other easily, but the Penance Stare finds no innocent blood on a man who has only ever killed demons, and the Crucible cuts through hellfire.
- Penance Stare immunityEvery death on the Slayer’s conscience is a demon.
- The CrucibleA blade forged to kill the gods of hell.
- Endless rageThe Slayer never stops fighting.
How the rematch could go differently: A Ghost Rider who kept the fight at range and used his chain to keep the Slayer away from the Crucible could hold his own.
