The Arena
A portal opened inside a ruined research station on Mars, and something came through that was not a demon. It was grey, covered in bony spikes, roaring with mindless fury. The Doom Slayer had killed a million demons. He looked at Doomsday and saw only another monster. He pumped his shotgun.
Doomsday did not see an enemy. It saw something to destroy, the way it sees everything. It charged across the station, smashing through walls and machinery, and the Slayer charged to meet it.
Somewhere in the ruins, a terminal flickered and logged the encounter: unidentified biological entity, threat level unknown.
Round One
The Slayer fired, and the blast tore a chunk out of Doomsday’s shoulder. Doomsday hit him with a punch that threw him through four walls of the station. The Slayer climbed out of the wreckage, fired a rocket, then switched to his chaingun and poured bullets into the monster.
Doomsday kept coming. Every wound closed. Every bullet bounced off thicker skin. The Slayer drew the Crucible and drove it through Doomsday’s chest, and for a moment the monster went still. Then it collapsed on the floor of the research station, dead.
The Slayer stood over the body, breathing hard. Then the body began to twitch.
The Turn
Doomsday rose again. Its body was larger now, and where the Crucible had pierced it, new bony armour had grown, shaped to stop that exact blade. It roared, louder than before, and charged. The Slayer met it with the BFG, a ball of green energy that tore through the station and vaporised everything in its path.
Doomsday was blown apart. The Slayer watched the smoke, waiting. The pieces moved. They crawled toward each other. They joined. And Doomsday rose again, larger still, its skin now resistant to the BFG’s energy.
The Slayer had killed things that came back before. He had never killed something that came back stronger.
The Finish
He killed Doomsday five more times. He tore it apart with his bare hands, burned it, shot it, cut it in half with the Crucible. Every time, it came back larger, stronger, and immune to whatever had killed it last. The Slayer’s weapons began to fail him one by one.
Finally, Doomsday caught him. It grabbed the Slayer in both giant hands and slammed him into the floor of the station again and again, until his armour cracked open and he could not rise. Doomsday roared over him, victorious, and then, mindless as ever, simply wandered off into the Martian desert, looking for something else to destroy.
The Slayer lay in the wreckage for a long time. Then, slowly, he got up. He looked at the trail of destruction leading into the desert, picked up his shotgun, and limped after it. He had lost the fight. He had no intention of losing the war.
The verdict
Doomsday wins
The Doom Slayer kills Doomsday again and again, but every death makes Doomsday stronger and immune to whatever killed it last, until the Slayer runs out of ways to kill it.
- AdaptationDoomsday returns immune to each weapon that killed it.
- ResurrectionEvery death makes Doomsday stronger.
- Wrong strategyThe Slayer’s whole approach is killing, which only helps Doomsday.
How the rematch could go differently: A Slayer who trapped Doomsday instead of killing it, sealing it in a portal or the void, could win without feeding its resurrection.
