The Arena
Toji Fushiguro took a contract to hunt a mutant in another world, a blue-skinned teleporter with a tail. The client paid well. Toji did not ask why. He found Kurt Wagner kneeling in an empty cathedral in Munich, praying quietly in the candlelight.
Kurt finished his prayer, crossed himself and turned around. “You have come to kill me,” he said gently, his yellow eyes calm. Toji shrugged, leaning against a pew. “Nothing personal. It’s just work.” Kurt stood up and drew two sabres from his belt. “Then I am sorry for both of us.”
He vanished in a puff of brimstone. Toji smiled.
Round One
Kurt reappeared behind Toji, sabres slashing. Toji ducked without looking, the blade passing over his head, and spun with his own sword. Kurt vanished again, reappeared above him on a chandelier, then dropped down with a kick. Toji caught his ankle and threw him into the pews.
Kurt was incredibly fast, teleporting around the cathedral, attacking from every angle, never staying in one place for more than a second. Most opponents never landed a single blow on him. But Toji had been born without cursed energy, and in exchange his senses were far beyond human. He could smell the brimstone a split second before Kurt arrived.
He began to track the smell, and to strike where it would appear.
The Turn
Kurt teleported to Toji’s left. Toji’s sword was already there. Kurt teleported behind him. Toji’s elbow was already there. Kurt teleported to the balcony and fired a candlestick at him. Toji caught it without looking. For the first time, the teleporter felt the cold fear of an opponent who knew where he would be before he did.
He changed tactics, teleporting faster, more randomly, three jumps in a single second, trying to overwhelm Toji’s senses. It almost worked. He landed a cut across Toji’s shoulder. Toji looked at the wound with interest. “You’re good,” he said. “Really good.”
Then he reached into the cursed spirit wrapped around his shoulders and drew out a chain.
The Finish
Toji swung the chain in a wide arc, filling the space around him with steel. When Kurt teleported in, the chain was already there. It wrapped around his tail and his ankle, and Toji yanked him out of the air and slammed him into the cathedral floor. Kurt tried to teleport, and the chain came with him, and Toji with it.
They landed in a tangle on the altar steps. Toji pressed his blade to Kurt’s throat. Kurt looked up at him, calm. “Go on,” he said softly. “I have made my peace.” Toji held the blade there for a long moment, looking at the blue man who had been praying when he arrived.
Then he stood up, coiled the chain, and walked toward the door. “Client didn’t pay enough for this,” he muttered. Kurt sat up, astonished. “Why?” Toji did not turn around. “You were praying for me,” he said. “Before I even got here. I heard you.” He left. Kurt stayed in the cathedral until dawn, praying for the man who had spared him.
The verdict
Toji Fushiguro wins
Nightcrawler’s teleportation makes him nearly impossible to hit, but Toji’s Heavenly Restriction senses detect him a split second before he arrives, and a chain lets Toji catch a teleporter in mid-jump.
