The Arena

Slade Wilson took a contract that seemed simple: eliminate a target in an abandoned port, payment double his usual fee. The target, it turned out, was also a hired killer. And he had taken a contract on Slade. Toji Fushiguro leaned against a shipping container, a scar on his lip, a lazy smile on his face. “So somebody wants both of us dead,” he said. “Funny.”

Deathstroke drew his sword. “I’m being paid to make it unfunny.” Toji shrugged and pulled a curled-up creature off his shoulders, a cursed spirit that worked as a storage space, and drew a long blade out of its mouth. “Same. Let’s not drag it out. I’ve got a horse race at nine.”

Slade’s enhanced brain processed the man in front of him: no armour, no visible weapons, no fear. That worried him far more than the blade.

Round One

Deathstroke attacked with surgical precision, his sword moving in patterns designed to cut a man down in three moves. Toji blocked the first, dodged the second and caught the third between two fingers. Slade stared. Toji smiled and kicked him across the dock and into a container.

Slade rolled up firing, and Toji dodged bullets by watching the shooter’s muscles, moving before the trigger was pulled. He was faster than Slade, stronger than Slade, and his senses were far beyond human. He had been born without a drop of cursed energy, and the world had given him a body that made up for it.

Deathstroke switched tactics. He was a master strategist, and he began to fight like one.

The Turn

Slade used the port itself. He detonated a container of fuel to blind Toji, fired grapple lines to swing behind him, and drove his sword through a gap in the smoke, a perfect strike that cut a deep line across Toji’s side. Blood splashed the dock. Toji looked down at the wound and laughed out loud.

“Nice! You’re good! Nobody’s cut me in a while.” He drew a different weapon from the storage curse: a three-section staff and a chain. Slade did not recognise either. He did not need to. Toji’s next attack came so fast that Slade’s enhanced reflexes, faster than any human, barely registered it.

The chain wrapped around Slade’s sword arm and yanked him off his feet. The staff hit his ribs, and he felt two of them crack.

The Finish

Slade fought on with a broken arm and a lung full of smoke, a soldier who had survived the Justice League. He landed another strike, a grenade, a punch to Toji’s jaw. Toji took them all and kept coming, faster and faster, enjoying himself in a way that was genuinely frightening.

Toji ended it with the Inverted Spear of Heaven, a short blade that cancels any technique it touches, and put its tip against Slade’s throat, pinning him against a container. Slade stared into his eyes. “Do it,” he said. “It’s the job.” Toji considered it.

Then he lowered the blade. “The client paid me half up front,” he said. “I’ll go and collect the other half from him instead. He set us both up, didn’t he?” Slade blinked, then laughed despite his broken ribs. “He did.” Toji walked off into the dark. “Nice fight. I’m going to lose all this money on a horse.”

The verdict

Toji Fushiguro wins

Deathstroke is a superb strategist with enhanced reflexes, but Toji’s Heavenly Restriction gives him a body far beyond Slade’s: faster, stronger and with senses that read every move before it happens.

  • PhysiqueToji’s Heavenly Restriction outclasses Deathstroke’s enhancement.

  • ArsenalCursed tools like the Inverted Spear of Heaven.

How the rematch could go differently: Given time to study Toji and design a trap, Deathstroke could plan his way to an advantage.
