The Arena
Doctor Doom detected an intruder in his castle at midnight: a tall, calm man in white robes, standing in the throne room as though he had always been there. Doom’s sensors had not registered him entering. Doom’s magic had not sensed him crossing the wards. “You are trespassing in the domain of Doom,” he said.
Sosuke Aizen smiled gently. “I know. I wanted to meet the man who believes he can rule the universe. It has been a long time since I spoke with someone who shares my ambition.” Doom’s gauntlets crackled with power. “No one shares Doom’s ambition. And no one survives insulting him.”
Aizen drew his sword, Kyoka Suigetsu, and held it up in the candlelight. Doom looked at the blade, and that was all it took.
Round One
Doom struck with a blast of sorcery and science that would have torn through a mountain. It hit Aizen squarely. Aizen fell. Doom stepped forward, satisfied. Then he felt a sword touch the back of his neck, and Aizen’s voice spoke softly behind him. “When did you believe that was me?”
Doom spun, firing again. Aizen dodged the blast with polite ease and cut a long line across Doom’s armour, sparks flying. Doom raised a mystic shield, teleported across the room and unleashed a barrage of energy. Aizen walked through the barrage, untouched, as if it were made of air.
Doom realised something was very wrong. He was the master of Latveria, and he was beginning to doubt his own eyes.
The Turn
Doom was a genius, and geniuses notice patterns. Every attack he aimed at Aizen missed, but every attack Aizen aimed at him landed. His senses, his sensors, even his magic were showing him a different reality. He understood: the moment he had looked at the sword, his perception had been hijacked.
He shut off his visual sensors. He sealed his armour and fought blind, relying on mystic senses alone, and for a few moments, it worked. He landed a spell that burned across Aizen’s shoulder and drew real blood. Aizen looked at the wound with genuine delight. “Remarkable. You are the first person in years to touch me.”
Then he let his spiritual pressure rise, and it fell on Doom like the weight of the sky.
The Finish
Aizen’s spiritual pressure was crushing, a pressure that had forced captains of the Soul Society to their knees. Doom’s armour groaned. His knees bent. He refused, with every ounce of his iron will, to kneel. And while he fought that pressure, Aizen’s Complete Hypnosis slipped back into his mind through his mystic senses, and Doom saw what Aizen wanted him to see.
He saw himself victorious, Aizen kneeling before him, Latveria triumphant. He lowered his guard. And Aizen, standing just behind him, laid the edge of his sword against the joint of the armour at Doom’s throat. Doom felt the blade, and the illusion shattered.
“A magnificent mind,” Aizen said quietly. “But you see what you wish to see. That is all I need.” He sheathed his sword and walked away into the darkness. Doom stood alone in his throne room for a long time, and then, for the first time in his life, began to design armour to protect him from his own eyes.
