The Arena

Sephiroth stepped out of the flames of a burning village, his long black coat untouched by the fire, the Masamune in his hand. Across the burning street, a tall figure in white with silver hair and crimson markings watched him with cold golden eyes. Sesshomaru had smelled the fire from miles away. He had come to see who had dared start it.

“You burned this village,” Sesshomaru said. Sephiroth smiled faintly. “It was in my way.” Sesshomaru’s eyes narrowed. “Nothing stands in my way.” Sephiroth’s smile widened. For the first time in a very long time, someone had spoken to him like an equal.

Sesshomaru drew Bakusaiga. Sephiroth raised the Masamune. The fire roared between them.

Round One

They moved at the same moment, and their blades met in the middle of the burning street with a sound like thunder. Both of them were faster than human eyes could follow, both of them perfectly graceful, and for a long time neither could land a blow.

Sephiroth’s Masamune was longer, its reach extraordinary. Sesshomaru’s Bakusaiga was deadlier, its edge disintegrating anything it touched. Sephiroth stepped aside from a cut that would have dissolved him, and in the same motion slashed Sesshomaru’s shoulder.

Sesshomaru looked at the blood on his white sleeve, then at Sephiroth. Something in his cold face changed. He was angry.

The Turn

Sesshomaru transformed into his true form, a giant white dog demon the size of a hill, breathing poison across the burning village. The flames turned green. The houses dissolved in the toxic mist.

Sephiroth spread a single black wing from his back and rose into the air above the poison. He raised his hand, and the sky began to darken. Black flames gathered above the giant demon, and Sephiroth brought them down in a storm of fire and darkness that drove Sesshomaru to the ground.

The demon rose again and lunged, its jaws closing around empty air. Sephiroth was already above it, the Masamune glowing.

The Finish

Sephiroth cut the demon with a hundred strikes in a single breath, each one long enough to cut a castle in half. The giant dog howled, shrank and returned to its humanoid form, falling to the ground among the ruins, its armour broken and its silver hair singed.

Sesshomaru tried to rise, his hand on Bakusaiga. Sephiroth landed in front of him and placed the point of the Masamune against his throat. For a long moment, the two silver-haired warriors looked at each other in the dying firelight.

“You are strong,” Sephiroth said. “Stronger than anyone I have met in this world. But you are bound to it. I am not.” Sesshomaru stared up at him with cold fury. Sephiroth withdrew his sword and walked away into the smoke, one black feather drifting down behind him. Sesshomaru picked it up and burned it.

The verdict

Sephiroth wins

Sesshomaru is a demon lord with a sword that disintegrates anything and a giant true form, but Sephiroth is faster, the Masamune outreaches Bakusaiga, and his dark magic gives him the decisive advantage.

  • ReachThe Masamune keeps Sesshomaru at a distance.
  • MagicSephiroth’s dark flames hurt even the giant demon form.
  • SpeedA hundred strikes in a single breath.

How the rematch could go differently: A Sesshomaru who landed a single scratch with Bakusaiga early would disintegrate Sephiroth before he could take flight.
