The Arena

A village in feudal Japan posted a contract that somehow reached Geralt across worlds: a demon in the forest was killing anyone who crossed its path. Geralt accepted, mostly because he needed the coin. He found the demon sitting in a clearing, perfectly still, with silver hair, crimson markings on his face and a long fur stole over his shoulder.

His medallion vibrated so hard it almost leapt off his chest. Sesshomaru opened his golden eyes and looked at Geralt with total indifference. “A human,” he said. “With strange eyes.” Geralt drew his silver sword. “The village says you killed six people.” Sesshomaru stood up. “They were in my way.”

Geralt drank three potions in a row. He had a feeling he was going to need all of them.

Round One

Geralt attacked with everything he had learned in a century of monster hunting. His silver sword flashed, a combination of strikes that had killed vampires and wraiths. Sesshomaru dodged them all without effort, moving so fast he seemed to vanish and reappear, and cut Geralt’s armour open with a single flick of his claws.

Geralt cast Igni, a blast of fire, and Sesshomaru stepped through it, his clothes not even singed. Geralt cast Aard, and Sesshomaru did not move an inch. The witcher realised quickly that this was not a monster at all. It was something far older and far more powerful, a demon lord of a world he did not know.

He changed tactics, coating his blade with demon oil, and landed a single cut across Sesshomaru’s arm. The demon looked at the blood, surprised.

The Turn

Sesshomaru drew his sword, Bakusaiga, and swung it once. Geralt dodged, and the blade’s wave of energy hit the trees behind him. They did not fall. They dissolved, disintegrating into dust from the inside out, and the destruction kept spreading, consuming everything it touched.

Geralt understood instantly that a single scratch from that sword would kill him. He cast Quen and fought with absolute focus, dodging and rolling, his potion-enhanced reflexes the only thing keeping him alive. He landed another cut with his oiled blade. Sesshomaru’s indifference finally cracked into irritation.

“You are persistent,” he said, and his eyes began to glow red. His body began to change.

The Finish

Sesshomaru transformed into his true form, a giant white dog demon the size of a hill, its breath poisonous green mist. Geralt had fought dragons. He had never fought anything like this. He threw bombs, cast every sign he knew and struck with his silver sword, and the giant demon brushed it all aside.

A single swipe of the giant paw sent Geralt flying across the clearing into a tree. He crawled to his feet, poisoned, bleeding, his potions running out. Sesshomaru returned to his humanoid form, walked over and held Bakusaiga a hair’s breadth from Geralt’s neck.

Geralt looked up at him, calm. “Go on.” Sesshomaru studied him for a long moment. Then, inexplicably, he sheathed his sword. “You fought well for a human,” he said, and walked away into the forest. Geralt sat in the ruined clearing, breathing hard, and decided that this was one contract he would never complete.

The verdict

Sesshomaru wins

Geralt is a master monster hunter who wounds Sesshomaru with oil and silver, but Sesshomaru is a demon lord with speed, a sword that disintegrates everything and a true form the size of a hill.

  • BakusaigaOne scratch disintegrates anything it touches.
  • SpeedSesshomaru moves faster than Geralt can follow.
  • True formA giant poisonous dog demon beyond any monster Geralt has fought.

How the rematch could go differently: A Geralt with time to prepare the right oils, bombs and research could find a weakness the way he always does.
