The Arena
Geralt and Blade arrived at the same ruined castle on the same night, hunting the same nest of vampires. They met in the courtyard, both covered in ash, both holding silver swords, surrounded by the bodies of a dozen vampires they had killed separately. They looked at each other for a long moment.
“You’re not human,” Geralt said, sniffing the air. Blade did not lower his sword. “Neither are you.” Geralt shrugged. “Mutant.” Blade nodded slowly. “Half vampire.” Geralt’s medallion began to vibrate. Blade saw it. The air between them grew very cold.
A vampire burst out of the shadows behind them, and both men killed it at the same instant. Then they turned back to each other.
Round One
Blade attacked first, his superhuman strength behind every strike, and Geralt parried with his silver sword and felt his arms ache from the impact. Geralt countered with a spinning combination, and Blade blocked it all with fluid speed. Two of the greatest monster hunters in fiction, each testing the other.
Blade was stronger and faster. Geralt was more technical and had a century of experience. They fought across the courtyard, through the castle gates, up the broken stairs, both of them landing cuts, both of them healing them: Blade with his vampire blood, Geralt with his potions.
At the top of the stairs, Blade drew a stake. Geralt raised his hand and formed a sign.
The Turn
Geralt cast Igni, a blast of flame that filled the stairwell. Blade dodged, but the fire caught his coat, and for an instant his vampire side recoiled from the heat. Geralt pressed forward, using Aard to throw Blade back into the great hall, and followed with a combination that opened a long cut across Blade’s chest.
Blade answered with his serum, a vial of anticoagulant he used to kill vampires, and hurled it at Geralt. It shattered against Geralt’s armour, harmless. Geralt was not a vampire. Blade cursed. Most of his arsenal had been designed to kill something Geralt was not.
Geralt, on the other hand, had spent his whole life studying creatures exactly like the vampire side of Blade.
The Finish
Geralt coated his silver sword with vampire oil, a preparation designed for his world’s strongest vampires. His next strike cut Blade across the arm, and the wound burned and refused to close. Blade stared at it. For the first time, his healing failed him.
He fought on, magnificent and furious, and nearly broke Geralt’s guard twice. But Geralt cast Quen to absorb a killing blow, then Axii to cloud Blade’s mind for a single second, and in that second he swept Blade’s legs and put the oiled silver blade against his throat.
Blade looked up at him, breathing hard. “Do it, witcher.” Geralt lowered the sword. “I don’t kill people for being half something,” he said. “I’d be a hypocrite.” He offered his hand. Blade took it, and they spent the rest of the night clearing the castle together, which, Geralt admitted, was much easier with two.
The verdict
Geralt of Rivia wins
Blade is stronger and faster, but his arsenal is built to kill vampires, while Geralt’s oils, signs and monster knowledge are built to hunt exactly the half of Blade that is a vampire.
- Vampire oilGeralt’s oil stops Blade’s healing.
- SignsIgni, Aard, Quen and Axii give Geralt magical tools.
- Wrong arsenalBlade’s serum and stakes do nothing to a human mutant.
How the rematch could go differently: A Blade who left his anti-vampire gear behind and fought Geralt with pure speed and strength could make it a coin flip.
