The Arena
Vegeta arrived in feudal Japan through a malfunctioning time machine, already irritated, and found himself standing in front of a tall, elegant demon with silver hair and crimson markings, who looked at him the way Vegeta usually looked at everyone else. Sesshomaru tilted his head. “What are you?”
Vegeta crossed his arms. “I am Vegeta, the Prince of all Saiyans. And you are in my way.” Sesshomaru’s golden eyes narrowed. “Nothing stands in my way.” Vegeta smirked. For once, he had found someone just as arrogant as he was. He was going to enjoy this.
The wind rose across the plain. Both of them were already moving.
Round One
Sesshomaru struck first with his claws, a poison whip of green light that lashed across the plain. Vegeta dodged it, flew in and drove his fist into Sesshomaru’s stomach. The demon lord slid back through the grass, then straightened, his face showing the first flicker of surprise in a hundred years.
He drew Bakusaiga and swung it, and its wave of destructive energy tore across the plain. Vegeta flew above it, firing a barrage of ki blasts that exploded around Sesshomaru in a ring of fire. Sesshomaru stepped out of the smoke, unharmed. Vegeta frowned. The demon was tougher than he looked.
They clashed in the air and on the ground, faster and faster, and the barren plain became a field of craters.
The Turn
Sesshomaru transformed into his true form, a giant white dog demon the size of a hill, its jaws dripping poison. It roared and lunged at Vegeta, and the poisonous breath turned the air around him green.
Vegeta powered up. His hair turned gold. His aura blazed. Super Saiyan. Then Super Saiyan Two, lightning crackling around him. He flew straight into the poisonous mist, his aura burning it away, and punched the giant dog demon in the jaw so hard it fell sideways and shook the earth.
“A big dog,” Vegeta said, landing on its head. “I have fought a giant ape. You will need to be much bigger than this.”
The Finish
Sesshomaru returned to his humanoid form and attacked with Bakusaiga again, a strike that would have disintegrated anything in his world. Vegeta caught the energy wave with both hands, his aura flaring, and shattered it. Then he raised his hands above his head and gathered a golden sphere of power. “FINAL FLASH!”
The beam hit Sesshomaru and drove him into the ground, carving a trench across the plain a kilometre long. When the light faded, the demon lord lay in the crater, his armour broken, his fur stole burning. For the first time in his life, he could not rise.
Vegeta landed beside him, arms crossed. “You were strong,” he said grudgingly. “For a dog.” Sesshomaru looked up at him with cold fury, then, slowly, something like respect. “And you,” he said, “are insufferable.” Vegeta laughed. It was, he decided, the nicest thing anyone had said to him in years.
