The Arena

Vegeta landed on the deck of a giant whale-shaped ship in the middle of a storm, looking for someone worth fighting. The pirates aboard drew their weapons. A giant old man with a white crescent moustache rose from his throne at the stern, leaning on a huge bladed staff, and waved them back. “Let him be, my sons.”

Vegeta crossed his arms and looked up at him. “You are the strongest man in this world?” Whitebeard laughed, a booming laugh that shook the mast. “So they say. Who are you, boy?” Vegeta’s face darkened. “I am Vegeta, Prince of all Saiyans. And I am not a boy.” Whitebeard grinned. “Everyone is a boy to me.”

Vegeta’s aura flared. Whitebeard raised his fist, and the air around it cracked like glass.

Round One

Whitebeard punched the air, and the air shattered. A quake rolled across the sea and hit Vegeta like a wall, throwing him off the ship and into the storm. Vegeta stopped himself in mid-air, astonished. He had never been hit by the sky itself before.

He flew back at the ship and hit Whitebeard with a punch that drove the old man back across the deck. Whitebeard grunted, smiled, and answered with his staff, cutting a wave of force that split the clouds. Vegeta dodged it and fired a Big Bang Attack. Whitebeard shattered it with a quake-coated fist.

The storm raged around them. Both of them were enjoying this far more than they should have been.

The Turn

Whitebeard grabbed the air with both hands and pulled, and the entire ocean tilted. A tsunami rose on either side of the ship, taller than mountains, and came crashing down on Vegeta. For a moment, the Prince of all Saiyans disappeared beneath the sea.

Then the water exploded upward, and Vegeta rose out of it, his hair and aura glowing blue. Super Saiyan Blue. The storm itself seemed to fall silent. Whitebeard looked at the young man with his blazing aura and nodded slowly, respectfully. “So that is your true strength,” he said.

Vegeta did not answer. He was already in front of him.

The Finish

Vegeta hit Whitebeard with a combination of blows faster than the old man could follow, and each one carried power on a planetary scale. Whitebeard took them, every one, his massive body refusing to fall. He was old and ill, but he was still the strongest man in his world, and he stood his ground like a mountain.

Vegeta raised his hands and gathered a golden sphere of light. Final Flash. The beam hit Whitebeard square in the chest and drove him back across the deck, through the mast, to the edge of the ship. And there, his feet still planted, his back still straight, the old man stopped. He did not fall. He simply could not move any further.

Vegeta lowered his hands, breathing hard. “Why won’t you fall?” Whitebeard smiled, blood on his moustache. “Because my sons are watching.” Vegeta looked at the hundreds of pirates on the deck, silent in the rain. He turned away and flew into the storm without another word. He had won, and he knew it. But he had never felt less like a winner.

The verdict

Vegeta wins

Whitebeard’s quake power can shake the sea itself and he refuses to fall, but Vegeta’s Super Saiyan Blue strength operates on a planetary scale, and the old man is fighting far beyond his limit.

  • Power scaleVegeta’s energy attacks can destroy planets; Whitebeard’s quakes shake islands.
  • SpeedSuper Saiyan Blue is far faster than Whitebeard.
  • Age and illnessWhitebeard fights on willpower alone by the end.

How the rematch could go differently: A young Whitebeard in his prime, without illness, would still lose on power, but would make Vegeta fight for every second.

Who do you think wins?

Who would win in a fight between Vegeta and Whitebeard?

Vegeta wins. Whitebeard’s quake power can shake the sea itself and he refuses to fall, but Vegeta’s Super Saiyan Blue strength operates on a planetary scale, and the old man is fighting far beyond his limit.
