The Arena
Vegeta heard that Goku had fought a man called Superman and lost nothing, gained a friend, and enjoyed himself. That was unacceptable. Vegeta flew across dimensions to find this Kryptonian himself, and found him in a crystal fortress in the Arctic, feeding a polar bear.
“Kakarot says you are strong,” Vegeta said, landing in the snow. Superman turned, smiling. “Goku? He’s a good guy. You must be Vegeta. He talks about you a lot.” Vegeta’s face reddened. “He talks about me?” Superman nodded. “Says you’re the strongest warrior he knows. Says you push him harder than anyone.”
Vegeta was silent for a moment, unsettled. Then he crossed his arms. “Then you will understand why I must defeat you.”
Round One
Vegeta attacked first, a barrage of ki blasts that lit up the Arctic sky. Superman flew through them, took a few on the chest, and caught Vegeta’s follow-up punch in one hand. Vegeta grinned and went Super Saiyan, his hair turning gold, and his next punch drove Superman through a glacier.
Superman climbed out of the ice and came back with a punch that sent Vegeta skidding across a kilometre of snow. They traded blows over the frozen sea, heat vision against Big Bang Attacks, Kryptonian strength against Saiyan pride. The ice shelf cracked beneath them.
Vegeta went Super Saiyan Blue. The northern lights turned blue with him.
The Turn
Superman realised he had been holding back, the way he always does, and that this man wanted him not to. He let go of the restraint he wears every moment of every day. His next punch hit Vegeta with enough force to send him through the atmosphere and halfway to the moon.
Vegeta stopped himself in orbit, wiping blood from his lip, and laughed. Finally. He flew back down at full speed, and they clashed above the Arctic in a collision that shook the planet. Vegeta was faster in bursts. Superman was steadier, drawing strength from the sun with every second.
Then the sun rose over the horizon, and Superman glowed with it.
The Finish
In the Arctic dawn, Superman absorbed the light of a yellow sun rising over a world of ice, and his strength kept climbing. Vegeta fired a Final Flash, everything he had, and Superman met it with heat vision, and the two beams held each other for a long moment before the heat vision pushed through.
Vegeta was thrown across the ice and lay in the snow, his Super Saiyan aura fading, too exhausted to rise. Superman landed beside him and knelt down. “You okay?” Vegeta glared up at him. “Do not pity me.” Superman shook his head. “I don’t. I’m impressed. You made me go all out. Not many people can.”
Vegeta was quiet for a long time. Then, very grudgingly, he said, “Kakarot was right about you.” Superman smiled. “He was right about you too.” He helped Vegeta to his feet, and for once, the Prince of all Saiyans did not refuse the hand. They watched the sun rise over the Arctic together, neither of them saying anything else.
The verdict
Superman wins
Vegeta matches Superman blow for blow and forces him to stop holding back, but Superman draws ever more strength from the sun, and at dawn his heat vision overpowers Vegeta’s Final Flash.
- Solar powerSuperman grows stronger as the sun rises.
- EnduranceHe outlasts Vegeta’s bursts of power.
- No restraintSuperman finally fights at full strength.
How the rematch could go differently: A Vegeta in Ultra Ego, his destroyer form, could absorb Superman’s blows and grow stronger with each one.
