The Arena

A rift opened between two fantasy worlds, and two rulers came to investigate it: Ainz Ooal Gown, the skeletal overlord of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, floating in his black robes, and Rimuru Tempest, the slime who ruled the monster nation of Tempest, walking calmly across the grass.

Ainz looked at Rimuru and assessed him carefully, the way he assessed everything, his mind racing behind his empty skull. Rimuru looked at Ainz and thought: that guy is definitely pretending to be scarier than he is. They stared at each other for a long moment. Then Ainz spoke, in his most impressive voice. “You stand before the Sorcerer King.”

Rimuru smiled. “Nice to meet you. I’m Rimuru. You used to be a salaryman, didn’t you?” Ainz froze completely.

Round One

Ainz recovered and attacked first, as overwhelming as possible, to establish dominance. He cast a barrage of tenth-tier spells: Reality Slash, Meteor Fall, Grasp Heart. Rimuru dodged the meteors, absorbed the Reality Slash and shrugged off Grasp Heart, because a slime does not have a heart to grasp.

Rimuru answered with his own magic, black lightning and gravity, and Ainz’s defences held. He was immune to so many things: mental effects, poison, death magic. Rimuru tested each immunity carefully, like a scientist, and found that Ainz’s undead body was extremely well protected.

Ainz cast Time Stop. Rimuru was immune. Ainz stared. That was supposed to be his strongest trick.

The Turn

Ainz decided to end it with his strongest super-tier magic: Fallen Down, a column of destructive light that could wipe out a city. It came down from the sky toward Rimuru, blinding and enormous. Rimuru looked up at it, opened his mouth, and swallowed the entire spell.

Ainz’s jaw, if he had muscles to move it, would have dropped. Rimuru licked his lips. “That was really strong. Tastes like holy magic.” He raised his hand and fired it back. Ainz was struck by his own super-tier spell and thrown across the grass, his robes burning, his bones cracking.

Ainz lay there and thought, very clearly: I am going to lose this, and I have to make it look like I planned it.

The Finish

Ainz rose slowly, magnificently, as though he had not been hurt at all. “Impressive,” he said in his deepest voice. “You have passed my test.” Rimuru blinked. “Your test?” Ainz nodded gravely. “I needed to know if you were worthy of an alliance.” Inside, Ainz was praying that this would work.

Rimuru looked at the battered skeleton, the cracked bones, the smoking robes, and decided to be kind. “Sure,” he said. “I passed. You win the test, I win the fight. An alliance sounds great.” Ainz held out a bony hand, and Rimuru shook it.

Later, when they were alone, Rimuru said quietly, “You know, it’s okay to just say you lost.” Ainz was silent for a long time. Then, in his real voice, the tired voice of an ordinary man, he said, “If my followers ever found out, they would be so disappointed.” Rimuru laughed. “Mine already know I’m a slime. It helps.”

The verdict

Rimuru Tempest wins

Ainz has hundreds of spells, time stop and super-tier magic, but Rimuru is immune to time stop, has no heart for Grasp Heart, and can swallow and return even Ainz’s strongest spell.

  • BeelzebuthRimuru devours and returns Fallen Down.
  • ImmunitiesTime stop and death magic fail against him.
  • Raw powerRimuru’s true demon lord power exceeds Ainz’s.

How the rematch could go differently: An Ainz who used his World Items, the most powerful artifacts in Nazarick, could find a way around Rimuru’s defences.
