The Arena

Ainz Ooal Gown sat on his throne in the deepest hall of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, his guardians kneeling before him, when a man in red appeared in the empty air with a polite cough. He had a long cape, horns and a very wide smile. “What a magnificent home,” said Mephisto. “I adore the skulls.”

Ainz did not move, but inside his skeletal body, the man who had once been an ordinary office worker panicked completely. How had this being entered Nazarick? His guardians leapt to their feet. Ainz raised a bony hand to stop them, as calmly as he could manage. “Who are you?”

Mephisto bowed. “A businessman. I collect souls. And yours, my dear overlord, is the most interesting one I have seen in centuries. A human soul, trapped in a god’s bones.”

Round One

Ainz’s guardians attacked before he could stop them. Albedo’s axe, Shalltear’s lance, Cocytus’s blades. Mephisto waved his hand, and all three froze in mid-air, their weapons turning into bouquets of flowers. He tutted. “Manners, children.”

Ainz cast Grasp Heart, a spell that crushes the heart of anyone it targets. Mephisto laughed. “I don’t have one.” Ainz cast a dozen more spells in a row, fire, death, darkness, curses. Mephisto absorbed some, deflected others and let one burn off half his face, which grew back with a little flourish.

Ainz realised quickly that his opponent was not a monster or a player. He was a being of a completely different scale.

The Turn

Ainz cast his strongest spell: Time Stop. The world froze. His guardians froze. Mephisto froze, in the middle of a sentence. Ainz walked toward him, preparing super-tier magic that would wipe out an army, and raised his hand.

“Do you know,” Mephisto said, as though nothing had happened, “I have been around since before time had a name. Stopping it is rather like holding your breath to stop the wind.” Ainz froze, horrified. Mephisto smiled. “But I do admire the effort.”

Then he showed Ainz something: a vision of his old friends, the players who had built Nazarick with him, and who had all logged out and left him alone. “I could bring them back,” Mephisto said softly. “All of them. For a small price.”

The Finish

Ainz’s undead nature suppressed his emotions, as it always did, but even so, something in him wavered. His friends. All of them. For one terrible moment, he considered it. Mephisto saw the moment and smiled. That moment was all he ever needed.

But Ainz did not sign. Instead, with a great effort, he cast the strongest super-tier spell he had, Fallen Down, a column of pure destructive light. It hit Mephisto squarely and burned away his body completely. For a few seconds, the throne room was silent. Then Mephisto’s laughter echoed from everywhere at once, and he reformed on Ainz’s own throne.

“Splendid,” he said. “You refused me. Almost nobody does.” He stood and bowed. “Keep the soul, overlord. I will be back, when you are lonelier.” He vanished. Ainz collapsed onto his throne, his guardians rushing to him, and for the first time since coming to this world, he was genuinely afraid. He had not won. He had simply not lost everything.

The verdict

Mephisto wins

Ainz has hundreds of spells, time stop and super-tier magic, but Mephisto exists on a cosmic scale, has no heart to crush, reforms from total destruction, and wins by finding what Ainz wants most.

  • Cosmic scaleMephisto is a reality-warping demon lord far beyond Ainz’s world.
  • ImmunityHe has no heart, is unaffected by time stop and reforms from destruction.
  • TemptationHe finds Ainz’s deepest loneliness and uses it.

How the rematch could go differently: An Ainz who used World Items, Nazarick’s strongest artifacts, could threaten even a being like Mephisto.

Who do you think wins?

Who would win in a fight between Mephisto and Ainz Ooal Gown?

Mephisto wins. Ainz has hundreds of spells, time stop and super-tier magic, but Mephisto exists on a cosmic scale, has no heart to crush, reforms from total destruction, and wins by finding what Ainz wants most.
