The Arena
Hiei followed a demonic scent through a crack in the Makai barrier and stepped into a misty forest in feudal Japan, where a boy with dog ears and a red robe was sitting in a tree, sulking. Inuyasha caught the scent of fire demon and dropped to the ground, Tetsusaiga already in his hand. “Who are you? You smell like trouble.”
Hiei looked him up and down and was not impressed. “A half-breed with a rusty sword. Go back to your tree.” Inuyasha’s ears flattened. “What did you just call me?” Hiei did not repeat himself. He simply drew his katana, and his Jagan eye opened on his forehead.
Inuyasha swung Tetsusaiga, and it transformed into a huge fang-shaped blade. Hiei smirked. “That is more like it.”
Round One
Inuyasha swung first, and Hiei was not there. He was behind him, then beside him, then above him, moving so fast that Inuyasha’s dog nose could barely track him. Hiei’s katana cut him across the back, the arm and the cheek before he could react. Inuyasha howled with anger and swung wildly.
One swing caught Hiei, and the giant fang threw him into a tree. Hiei got up, surprised. The half-breed was stronger than he looked, and that sword was heavy enough to break bones even when it missed by a centimetre.
They traded blows through the forest, Hiei’s speed against Inuyasha’s stubborn strength, both of them swearing at each other the whole time.
The Turn
Inuyasha sniffed the air and found it: the place where his demonic aura and Hiei’s collided, a seam in the wind. He swung Tetsusaiga down through it with all his strength. “WIND SCAR!” Five blades of light tore through the forest, splitting trees and earth in a line of destruction a hundred metres long.
Hiei barely dodged. The edge of the attack caught his arm and burned his cloak. He landed, breathing hard, blood running down his fingers. Inuyasha grinned. “Still think this sword is rusty?” Hiei looked at his wounded arm for a long moment, then started to unwrap the bandages around it.
Beneath the bandages, a black dragon was tattooed on his skin. Inuyasha smelled it, and every hair on his neck stood up.
The Finish
Hiei’s arm burst into black flame. “Dragon of the Darkness Flame,” he said. A dragon of black fire rose out of his arm, huge and roaring, flames that came from the deepest part of the Demon World. It swept across the forest toward Inuyasha.
Inuyasha swung Tetsusaiga and tried to use the Backlash Wave, the technique that throws an enemy’s attack back at them. It caught part of the dragon and turned it aside. But the rest of the black flame swallowed him, throwing him across the forest and into a riverbed, his robe of fire-rat fur the only reason he survived.
Hiei walked over and stood above him as he coughed and tried to rise. Then he sheathed his sword. “You are not as weak as I thought, half-breed,” he said. Inuyasha spat out river water. “Feh. You’re short.” Hiei’s eye twitched. For one terrible moment, Inuyasha thought he was about to be burned again.
The verdict
Hiei wins
Inuyasha is stronger, tougher and his Wind Scar nearly ends the fight, but Hiei is far faster and his Dragon of the Darkness Flame is too much for even the Backlash Wave to fully return.
- SpeedHiei moves faster than Inuyasha’s nose can track.
- Darkness FlameA dragon of black fire from the depths of the Demon World.
- PrecisionHiei’s sword lands repeatedly while Inuyasha swings wildly.
How the rematch could go differently: An Inuyasha with the Meido Zangetsuha could cut a path to the underworld and send the dragon there with Hiei behind it.
