The Arena
Yuno followed a strange magical signal through a rift and came out on a cliff above a dark forest, where a short demon in a black cloak stood on a rock, his arms folded, a third eye half open on his forehead. Hiei looked at the tall boy with the four-leaf grimoire and sneered. “A human magician. How boring.”
Yuno did not react. He rarely does. “I am Yuno of the Golden Dawn,” he said calmly. “I will become the Wizard King.” Hiei’s eye twitched. “Another one with a big dream. They always die first.” The wind around Yuno began to stir. A small spirit with green hair appeared on his shoulder and stuck her tongue out at Hiei.
Hiei drew his katana. Yuno opened his grimoire. The wind and the fire moved at the same moment.
Round One
Hiei vanished, moving so fast he seemed to disappear, and reappeared behind Yuno with his sword already swinging. Yuno was not there. He had ridden a gust of wind into the air, faster than most eyes could follow, and Hiei’s blade cut only his cloak.
They fought across the cliff top at blinding speed, Hiei’s sword against Yuno’s wind blades. Hiei was faster on the ground. Yuno owned the air. Every time Hiei leapt to strike, Yuno rose higher, and every time Yuno fired wind blades, Hiei cut them out of the air.
Hiei landed a cut across Yuno’s arm. Yuno answered with a tornado that threw Hiei off the cliff. Hiei landed on a tree below and came back up, annoyed.
The Turn
Hiei unwrapped the bandages on his right arm. A black dragon of fire rose out of it, enormous and roaring, the Dragon of the Darkness Flame. It swept across the cliff toward Yuno, burning the air itself.
Yuno did not flee. He raised his hand, and Sylph the wind spirit merged with him, his body glowing green, his hair rising in the storm. Spirit Dive. The wind around him became a hurricane, and he met the black dragon head on, splitting its flames with a spear of compressed air.
The dragon tore through the wind and burned Yuno’s shoulder. The wind tore through the dragon and scattered its flames across the sky. Both of them were pushed back, breathing hard.
The Finish
Hiei summoned the dragon again, but the Darkness Flame drains his strength, and the second dragon was smaller than the first. Yuno saw it and attacked with everything he had, the Spirit of Zephyr, a storm of wind blades so vast it filled the whole sky above the cliff.
Hiei cut through hundreds of them and was struck by hundreds more. He fell to one knee on the cliff top, his katana cracked, his dragon fading. Yuno landed in front of him, his spirit dive dissolving, and lowered his hand.
“You are strong,” Yuno said calmly. Hiei glared up at him, panting. “Don’t be smug.” Yuno almost smiled. “I am not smug. I have a rival who is much more annoying than you.” Hiei, despite himself, snorted with laughter. “So do I.” Somewhere far away, Asta and Yusuke both sneezed.
The verdict
Yuno wins
Hiei is faster on the ground and his Darkness Flame is devastating, but Yuno controls the air, his Spirit Dive with Sylph matches the dragon, and his wind magic outlasts a technique that drains Hiei’s strength.
- Air controlYuno fights from the sky, out of Hiei’s reach.
- Spirit DiveMerging with Sylph lets him match the Darkness Flame.
- EnduranceThe dragon drains Hiei; Yuno’s wind magic keeps going.
How the rematch could go differently: A Hiei who fought in a forest with no open sky could stay close and keep Yuno on the ground.
