The Arena

Mugen stumbled through a strange fog and woke up in a ruined village under a red moon, hungry, broke and in a terrible mood. A boy with silver hair and dog ears was rummaging through the ruins for food. Mugen grinned. “Hey, dog boy. That rice ball is mine now.”

Inuyasha turned and growled. “Who are you calling dog boy?” Mugen drew his sword, a strange, curved blade, and started spinning it. “The guy who’s about to take your lunch.” Inuyasha cracked his knuckles. “You smell like a human. A really stupid one.” Mugen laughed. “Yeah. I get that a lot.”

They both lunged at the same time.

Round One

Mugen fought like nobody Inuyasha had ever met: breakdancing kicks, upside-down slashes, spinning cuts from impossible angles. He landed three strikes before Inuyasha even drew his sword, and one of them cut the red robe. Inuyasha snarled, amazed. “What kind of fighting is that?”

Mugen grinned. “Mine.” Inuyasha answered with his claws, Iron Reaver Soul Stealer, and five glowing slashes tore through the ruins. Mugen flipped over them, landed on a broken roof and laughed with delight. He had never fought a demon before. This was the most fun he had had in months.

Inuyasha drew Tetsusaiga, and it transformed into a fang-shaped blade bigger than Mugen. Mugen’s grin got even wider.

The Turn

They clashed in the ruins, Mugen’s chaotic speed against Inuyasha’s enormous blade. Mugen kept slipping inside the big sword’s reach and landing cuts, and Inuyasha kept shrugging them off. A human would have bled out by now. The half-demon barely noticed.

Then Inuyasha sniffed the air and found the seam where his aura met Mugen’s. “WIND SCAR!” Five blades of light tore across the village, destroying everything in their path. Mugen threw himself sideways, rolled, and came up with his clothes smoking and his eyes wide.

“Okay,” he said, laughing shakily. “That’s new.” Behind him, a hundred metres of village had simply disappeared.

The Finish

Mugen kept attacking, because that is the only thing Mugen knows how to do. He was faster than Inuyasha and landed more strikes, but each one did less damage than the last. Inuyasha’s demon blood kept healing him, and the half-demon was stronger and tougher than any human could ever be.

Finally, Inuyasha caught Mugen’s sword on the flat of Tetsusaiga and shoved, and Mugen flew through the air and crashed into a well. He lay at the bottom, groaning, his sword beside him, looking up at a circle of red sky and a pair of dog ears peering down at him.

“You done?” Inuyasha asked. Mugen spat out well water. “Yeah, yeah. You win, dog boy.” Inuyasha pulled him out and, grudgingly, split the rice ball in half. They ate in silence, two terrible-tempered swordsmen too tired to argue for once.

The verdict

Inuyasha wins

Mugen is faster, more creative and lands more strikes, but Inuyasha is a half-demon who heals from human wounds and the Wind Scar gives him destructive power Mugen cannot answer.

  • Demon durabilityInuyasha shrugs off cuts that would kill a human.
  • TetsusaigaThe Wind Scar destroys everything in its path.
  • StrengthHe overpowers Mugen when their blades meet.

How the rematch could go differently: On a new moon, when Inuyasha turns human, Mugen’s speed and unpredictability would make him the clear favourite.
