The Arena

Aizen fell asleep for the first time in a century, bored with his own perfection, and found himself in a strange realm: a vast library, a palace, a garden, all shifting slowly like a dream. A tall, pale figure in black with stars in his eyes stood waiting for him. “You have come to the Dreaming,” said Dream of the Endless.

Aizen smiled, intrigued. “A dream. How fitting. I am the master of illusion. Perhaps I could rule a realm made of them.” Dream did not blink. “Every illusion you have ever cast,” he said quietly, “was born here first. You have been borrowing from me your whole life.”

Aizen’s smile faded slightly. He drew his sword, Kyoka Suigetsu, and let Dream see it.

Round One

Aizen activated Complete Hypnosis, the illusion that controls every sense of anyone who sees the blade. Dream looked at the sword, and the illusion flowed toward him, and he simply absorbed it, the way an ocean absorbs a drop of water. “A pretty dream,” he said. “Not a very original one.”

Aizen attacked with kido, black coffins and lightning, and the Dreaming shifted around them. The black coffin became a box of butterflies. The lightning became a shower of stars. In this realm, Dream decided what everything was, and he decided Aizen’s attacks were harmless.

Aizen realised, slowly, that he had walked into a world where he had no power at all.

The Turn

Aizen released his ultimate form, wings of light, his spiritual pressure crushing everything around him. In the Soul Society, gods had knelt before that power. In the Dreaming, it was simply another dream, and Dream let it pass through him like wind.

Then Dream did something no one had ever done to Aizen. He showed him the truth. Not an illusion. The truth: Aizen’s own dreams, the ones he had never admitted to anyone. Not dreams of ruling heaven. Dreams of finding someone, anyone, who could stand beside him as an equal, so he would not be alone at the top.

Aizen froze. For the first time in centuries, he was the one being deceived, and the deceiver was himself.

The Finish

His wings faded. His spiritual pressure fell away. He stood in the Dreaming, an ordinary man in white robes, looking at the dream he had hidden from everyone, including himself. Dream stood beside him, quiet and patient. “Every being dreams,” Dream said. “Even those who believe they are gods.”

Aizen was silent for a long time. Then he laughed softly, the first genuine laugh in a hundred years. “I came here to rule a realm of illusions,” he said. “And instead I have been shown the only truth I ever avoided.” Dream inclined his head. “That is what dreams are for.”

Aizen woke up in his prison, alone, as he had been for years. But something had changed. For the first time, he did not feel the need to deceive anyone. He simply sat, thinking about his dream, and waited for the night to come again so he could return to the library and talk to its strange, quiet keeper.

The verdict

Dream of the Endless wins

Aizen is the greatest master of illusion in his world, but in the Dreaming every illusion belongs to Dream, his attacks become harmless, and Dream defeats him by showing him the truth he hid from himself.

  • Home realmIn the Dreaming, Dream controls everything.
  • Source of illusionsEvery illusion Aizen casts is born in Dream’s realm.
  • The truthDream shows Aizen his hidden loneliness.

How the rematch could go differently: In the waking world, where Dream is weaker, Aizen’s power could genuinely threaten one of the Endless.
